Coburn Jr. WYOMISSING Frederic Ward Coburn, Jr., 101, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2011, of natural causes in The Highlands at Wyomissing, where he was a charter member and resident for 21 years. He was predeceased on December 10, 1996, by his wife of 61 years, Mary Louise (Mercer) Coburn. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on June 3, 1910, he was the son of the late F. Ward and Edith (Cheney) Coburn. He was a graduate of Mercersburg Academy class of 1928, and Yale University class of 1932. Ward retired as chairman of the board of the C.K. Whitner Co., where he was controller and treasurer. Following his retirement, he was an active member of the Service Corps of Retired Executives and the International Executive Service Corps. His civic activities included being a member of the board of trustees of St. Joseph's Hospital, Reading, director and treasurer of the YMCA and the Reading Chamber of Commerce, director and president of the Independent Dry Goods Syndicate, director and president of the Credit Bureau of Reading, a member of the Community Chest Board (United Way), director and president of the Iris Club of Wyomissing, and president of the Guana Bay Property Owners Association, St. Maarten, Netherland Antilles. He served in the Navy during WWII, retiring as Lieutenant Commander. He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn C., widow of Theodore C. Auman, III, of Wyomissing, and Jocelyn C., wife of C. Walter Whitmoyer, Jr., of Myerstown. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Theodore Ward Auman, spouse of Christine McGlinn Auman of Wyomissing, Cynthia Auman King, spouse, of David W. King of New York, William Bradford Whitmoyer, spouse of Daryl Alexandre Whitmoyer of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Thomas Coburn Whitmoyer, spouse of Jane Cresswell Whitmoyer of Coral Gables, Fla., and Jocelyn Grafin von Arnim, spouse of Maximilian Graf von Arnim, of London, United Kingdom. There are also surviving nine great- grandchildren, Theodore Ward Auman, Jr., Carter Terrence Auman, Margaret Elizabeth Auman, Katherine Mercer Whitmoyer, Turner Alexandre Whitmoyer, Saskia Coburn Whitmoyer, Nicholas Charles Whitmoyer, Eleanor Alexandra Ward Grafin von Arnim, and Frederick Walter Graf von Arnim. Ward was predeceased by siblings, Fordyce Coburn and Sally Coburn Taylor. The Theo C. Auman Inc. Funeral Home, Reading, is in charge of arrangements.
