M. shabodeho@aol.com January 14, 2011, 12:22 am Published in Lebanon Daily News on January 9, 2011 Helen Pelesky Curanzy PALMYRA Helen (Pelesky) Curanzy, 81, died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at Lebanon Valley Brethren Home. She was born in Jenners, Somerset Co., on Saturday, May 25, 1929, to the late John and Pauline (Radowsky) Pelesky. Helen and her late husband, Raymond Ralph Curanzy, M.D., who died in January 2009, met at the Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown, where she was a practicing RN and he was a Junior Intern. They were married in 1951 and moved to Palmyra in 1952. A few years later, both she and her husband were instrumental in establishing Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Palmyra. For many years Helen enjoyed singing in the church choir. During the late 60's and early 70's, she worked tirelessly to solicit donations for Quentin Riding Club horse shows. She was a Master Gardener and plantswoman, having been a charter member of the Palmyra Garden Club, an organization in which she was very active for 25 years. She collected dwarf conifers, magnolias, and other specimen trees and plants at her farm, Foxrock, in Annville. In addition to her gardening, she was an avid golfer, tennis player, and skier. She was a wonderful cook and accomplished baker. She loved animals and encouraged her children to bring home diverse pets such as skunks and snakes. Over the years she cared for many dogs, horses, goats, and fowl. Helen's avocation was collecting antiques and seeking out bargains. She was a regular fixture every Tuesday at Root's Market and Auction in Ephrata. She also kept herself busy as a substitute school nurse and served as an insurance exam nurse. After Ray's retirement from medical practice, they both enjoyed the freedom for more world travel. Helen was preceded in death by son, John Phillip Curanzy; and is survived by brother, Steven Pelesky; sisters, Pauline Farrell and Verdeen Frederick; her daughter, Donna Curanzy-Seltzer and husband, Craig H. Seltzer of Hummelstown; her son, Raymond Ralph Curanzy, Jr. and wife, Michelle (Celaya) Curanzy of Annville; and three grandchildren, Owen Michael Seltzer, Raymond Ralph Curanzy, III, and Lillian Margaret Curanzy. Helen was a very capable woman. She was as comfortable hosting a formal dinner and going to the symphony as she was dickering with a farmer over a flat of tomatoes. She appreciated the arts in all its forms and tried to create beauty in her world. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 245 W. Pine St., Palmyra, with Fr. James F. Podlesney, OSB as celebrant. Burial will be private at convenience of the family. Services have been entrusted to Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra.
