Donten, Sr., 94, passed away February 14, 2011, with his wife Mary by his side at the Tremont Health & Rehab Nursing Center. Herbert was born January 14, 1917, in Lebanon, the son of the late George and Matilda Miller Donten. Herbert could accomplish anything he set his mind out to do. He could fix just about everything. He loved to carve things out of wood, he even made his own swing set for the children to play on, which still stands. He loved to tell his family stories of his childhood and working on the railroad and loved being the caretaker for his parents. He served in the United States Army and worked at the Bethlehem Steel Foundry, then worked for the Reading Railroad for 33 years until his retirement. His main position was a brakeman, along with all the other duties, such as building railroad tracks and assisting with train accidents, same as his father did before him. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ditzler Donten of 71 years; sister, Marguerite Donten Ditzler; a son and a daughter, Herbert Donten, Jr. and Joyce Donten Pete and their spouses, Jeanie and John; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; seven great-great- grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 10 sisters, one brother and two great-grandchildren, Brooke Pete and John Kirkpatrick III. He will be sadly missed by all his grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Graveside service on Monday at 11 a.m. at Grand View Memorial Park , 500 N. Webber Street, Anvils. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 126 S. 9th St., Lebanon, is entrusted with the arrangements.
