Depends on how you play it. Charles W. Engle, 75, died Saturday, September 10, 2011, in the Good Samartian Hospital in Lebanon. He was the husband of Phyllis Killinger Engle, to whom he was married for 52 years. Born in Lebanon on May 2, 1936, he was the son of the late James William and Mazzie Mengle Engle. Charles attended Jonestown High School and served in the U.S. Army. He was employed by Bethlehem Steel in the threading department for 29 years and later worked for Cornwall-Lebanon School District for 13 years in the food service department. He was a member of the East Hanover Church of God, an active member of the Mt. Lebanon Lodge #226 since 1968, served as the lodge steward for 25 years, lodge guide corp and the breakfast committee. Charles was also a member of the Lebanon Quittapahilla Forest #25 Tall Cedars, Scottish Rites of Harrisburg, Zembo Shrine, Rajah Shrine and served as the president of the string band from 1990 to 1992. He also was a member of the Legion of Honor for the Rajah Shrine, life member of the Quittie Woods, Friendship Fire Company, Jonestown Perseverance Fire Company and also was an avid fisherman and NASCAR fan. His pastime was making people happy and smile with his music, traveling, visiting the WWII locales and cooking. During the 70's-80's he played with local music groups playing the guitar and singing and in 1982 he organized his own country/rock and roll group called "Old Spice". Charles played more recently with the group "String Crew". Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a sister, Sylvia Beavers of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; 18 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jo Lynn Springborn; seven brothers, James, Harvey, Clarence, Earl, Paul, Ronald and Calvin Engle; a step-brother, William Lear; and one sister, Arlene Engle. Memorial services will be held Friday at 4 p.m. from the Kreamer & Lum Funeral Home and Crematory, Rt. 72 and Campmeeting Rd., Jonestown. Inurnment will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service from 2 to 4 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 3 p.m. in the funeral home.
