Ferry PALMYRA Mark Zeller Ferry, 91, of Palmyra, formerly of Lebanon, died Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at the Royer Green House at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Jean Miller Ferry, in 1995. He was also predeceased by his half-sister, Dorothy Anspach, and a grandson, Thomas B. Bowman III. Born June 12, 1920 in Palmyra, Ferry was the son of the late George U. and Virginia Zeller Ferry. He attended Palmyra Area High School and Lebanon Valley College. During World War II, he was a Tech. Sergeant serving as a weapons instructor in Cadre at the Infantry Replacement Training Center at Fort McClellan in Alabama. Ferry and his wife were proprietors of Ferry's on the square in Palmyra until they closed the store in 1979 and retired. The store was founded as a general store in 1905 by Ferry's father, George. When Ferry and his wife purchased the business in 1951 they converted it to an apparel and domestics store. Ferry was a member of the American Legion, and a life member of Trinity United Church of Christ and Citizen's Fire Company #1, of Palmyra. He was a former member of Lebanon Country Club, Quentin Riding Club, Valley Beach Club, Lebanon County Chamber of Commerce, and the Pennsylvania Retailers' Association. He was a past president of the Palmyra Business Association, and a former member and song leader of the Palmyra Rotary Club. Ferry had served on the Board of Directors of the Valley Trust Company of Palmyra, and on the Advisory Board of American Bank and Meridian Bank. He enjoyed cruising, gardening, music, and dancing. Ferry and his wife traveled throughout the United States, Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, Africa, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, South and Central America, and Canada. He was devoted to his late wife and to his family. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lynda J.F. and Glenn E. Moore of Harrisburg; daughter Sylvia Ferry Bowman of Palmyra; granddaughter Alexis Moore Evans, her husband Henry, and great-grandchildren Collin and Alicia Jean Nissley of Palmyra; grandson Mark T. Bowman of Myerstown; and grandson Zachary J. Moore of Harrisburg. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 19, 2011 at 11 AM at Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 West Pine Street, Palmyra, PA 17078 with Chaplain Dr. Norman D. Yeater officiating. Family and friends are invited for viewing from 10 AM until time of the service. Burial will follow in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra.
