"Gene" Grumbine, 83, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2011, in Tremont Health & Rehab Center. Born on April 17, 1928, in Tremont, he was a son of the late William and Dora Ann Pearson Grumbine. Gene was a Cpl. in the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean Conflict. He worked as a psychiatric nursing assistant at the VA Medical Center, Lebanon. Gene was a member of Pine Grove VFW Post 3432, the Pine Grove American Legion Post 374, and Pine Grove Fish & Game Association. He was a former baseball and basketball player, and five time all star softball player. He officiated at baseball, softball, swimming, and diving meets. Gene was a Euchre tournament organizer and an avid card player. Preceding him in death were his companion, Emma Louise Neidlinger Witmer; sons, Kenneth Grumbine and William Grumbine; a stepson, Eric Witmer; brother, Lamar Grumbine; and three sisters, Anna Miller, Doris Mease, and Milva Grumbine. Surviving are one daughter, Joni Lynn Haddox of Chesapeake, Va.; one son, James Grumbine of Annville; three stepdaughters, Elizabeth Eck of Pine Grove, Cindy Pennington of Jonestown, and Louise Wallish of Freeburg; stepson, Steve Witmer of Georgia; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren, Patrick Eck and Ryan Eck of Pine Grove; and nieces and nephews. Services will be held in the H.L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc. today, September 6, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Raymond Hurst officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John's Lutheran, Tremont. There will be a calling time on today from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
