M. shabodeho@aol.com February 19, 2011, 10:59 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on February 11, 2011 Esther Spangler Hoke RICHMOND HILL, GA Esther Spangler Hoke, 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, in Richmond Hill, under hospice care. She was the widow of Joseph "Ted" Hoke and is survived by her son, Joseph T. Hoke, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Donna J. Hoke of Richmond Hill, Ga.; grandchildren, Allison (Shawn) Alexander of Silver Spring, Md., Aimee (CJ) Davis of Wake Forest, N.C., and Andrew Hoke of Atlanta, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Anthony and Caden Alexander; sister, Pauline Roller of Sterling, Va.; brother-in-law, Robert Deitzler of Lebanon; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Esther is best remembered for her appreciation of all things "homemade." Her artistic creativity can be seen in her sewing ability, which included clothing, draperies, upholstery, and quilting. She also was quite accomplished as a craftswoman in basket weaving, chair caning, bargello, painting, wallpapering, and furniture refinishing. Esther shared these talents with her family and friends. Esther was a very active individual who enjoyed "doing stuff" and hearing about the travels of her family. She lived most of her life in Lebanon County, except for the last five years spent in Richmond Hill, Ga., and during WWII, when she worked for the War Department in Elmira, N.Y., and New York City. She was retired from Haak Bros. Dept. Store in Lebanon. Esther was a 1935 graduate of Lebanon High School, and until her relocation to Georgia, actively participated in the reunion committee. She was a lifelong member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ in Lebanon, bur during her years living in Georgia attended Richmond Hill United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, February 13, 2011, at St. Mark's U.C.C. in Lebanon, with the family receiving friends during the hour preceding the service. Burial will be in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances to St. Mark's U.C.C., 8th and Mifflin Sts., Lebanon, PA 17046.
