Howard PALMYRA Phyllis Luella (Johnston) Howard, 91, passed away peacefully at The Good Samaritan Hospital with her loving son by her side, on Wednesday, November 9, 2011. She was predeceased by her husband, Melvin J. Howard, in 2004. She was born Saturday, May 1, 1920, in Palmyra, to the late John W. and Bertha V. (Speck) Johnston. She was a 1937 graduate of Palmyra High School, and a member of Union Deposit United Methodist Church, where she actively served for many years, including teaching Sunday school. She had a vibrant passion for art and music, particularly stringed instruments. She showered friends and family with her selfless love and fervor for life. She is survived by a son, Barry E. Howard of Lebanon; four nephews, Howard Summy and wife, Sandra of Allentown, Terry Howard and wife, Karen of Lebanon, Ronald Miller of Hershey, and Bruce Fasnacht of Palmyra; and a niece, Mary Walters and husband, Russell of the Poconos. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, both of whom died at a very young age; and a niece, Betty Weitzel. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 14, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra 17078 with the Rev. Gail P. Boyer officiating. Family and friends are invited for viewing from 10 a.m. until time of the service. Burial will follow in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra.
