M. shabodeho@aol.com January 21, 2011, 6:40 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on January 21, 2011 LaVerne Hunley LEBANON LaVerne Wiebenga Hunley, 78, of Hearthstone Manor and formerly of Mt. Gretna, died Tuesday, January 18, 2011, in Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon. She was the widow of the late James Kettering Hunley, to whom she was married more than 51 years. Born on September 30, 1932, in Youngstown, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late John and Eva Wiebenga. She studied music at the Peabody Institute and Lebanon Valley College and was a music teacher and choir director. She also served as Managing Director for Gretna Theatre. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Palmyra Chapter #402, and the Mt. Gretna Fire Company Auxiliary. LaVerne loved music, traveling with Jim, and her frogs. She and her husband also contributed to the restoration of the C.S.S. Hunley, the only submarine to see service during the Civil War. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by their daughter, Ruth Angel Hunley. She is survived by sisters-in-law; a niece; nephew; and cousins. At LaVerne's request, there will be no services. The Pennsylvania Cremation Society is handling the arrangements.
