"Mart" Lerch, Sr., 84, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2011, at his home. Born in Elizabethtown on March 21, 1927, he was the son of the late Martin L. and Caroline Bard Lerch. Mart retired from the former Verdelli Farms, Hummelstown, where he was a truck driver. He was an U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II. Mart was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 265 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1687 both of Hummelstown. He was an avid golfer; a lover of nature especially feeding the birds; and enjoyed recycling cans. Mart is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty J. Arnold Lerch, whom he married on December 4, 1950; three sons, Marlin J. Lerch, Jr. of Hershey, Joseph M. Lerch of Hummelstown, and Douglas W. Lerch husband of Connie of Blain; two daughters, Barbara A. Seibert wife of Scott of Middletown, and Patricia D. Olinger wife of Roger of Hummelstown; four brothers, Earl E. Lerch of White Bluff, Tenn., Robert C. Lerch of Hershey, Jack D. Lerch of Hummelstown, and Dale E. Lerch of Oberlin; four sisters, Jean A. Shertzer and Stella J. Cobaugh both of Hummelstown, Dolores M. Cobaugh of Williamsport, and Gloria J. Sumpter of Mt. Joy; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Marlin J. Lerch, III; two brothers, Adam Lerch and Donald M. Lerch; and one sister, Irene Cobaugh. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 W. Main St., Hummelstown, with The Rev. Kimberly B. Shifler, his pastor, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the Hummelstown Cemetery. Friends are invited to the viewings in the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of the services.
