Mease, 88, formerly of Pine Grove, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2011, in Manor Care Pottsville. Born on August 9, 1923, in Suedberg, he was a son of the late John J. Mease, Sr. and the late Beulah Strausser Mease. John was a member of the St. Mathew's Lutheran Church in Ravine. He was a 1943 graduate of Tremont High School. John was also a member of the Oak Grove Gun Club, the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, and the Swatara Archers. He was an avid archer and loved hiking. John worked as a firefighter for Indiantown Gap. John was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, having served with Co. G 116th Inf 29th Div. The Division was called the Blue & Gray from Virginia and their motto was "The 29th Let's Go". John trained in England in the Spring of 1944. He was in the first wave to land at Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day, where 2400 troops were lost. He also served in Northern France and Campaign Germany. John received the Combat Infantryman Badge, 44 Unit Citation, GO 26 FUSA 44 Expert Infantryman Badge GO 9, the Good Conduct Medal, and three bronze service stars. Preceding him in death was a sister, Dorothy Conrad. Surviving are son, Dean and wife, Debbie Mease of Lebanon. Services will be held at H.L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., on Tuesday, August 30, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Terry Jansma officiating. Interment will follow in the Church of God, Pine Grove. Friends will be received at the at the funeral home on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.
