Mingo FREDERICKSBURG Our beloved John Everett Mingo passed away on Monday, January 31, 2011. He was 62 years old. John was born in Portland, Maine, the son of Lillian and Leander Mingo. After completion of high school, he spent four years in the Marine Corps and was discharged in 1972 with several medals and commendations. Following his service in the Marines, he went to work for Coca Cola in New Hampshire. In 1996 he was forced into early retirement due to several heart attacks. On April 22, 2007, John received a heart transplant at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Following his heart transplant he became a patient advocate at the Medical Center and served on several committees to help produce facility designs that were more patient friendly. When he was able, he was also an active volunteer for the Red Cross of the greater Harrisburg area. A life-long animal lover, John will be best remembered for his development of the website, In-Memory-Of-Pets.com. This is a website devoted to helping other pet lovers deal with the grief of losing a beloved pet. What started out as a website memorial to his Cocker Spaniel, Candy, has grown to include over a million pets of other people, including, royalty, professionals, movie producers, and at least one past President of the United States and the First Lady. John was an outgoing individual who never hesitated to help others. He was a published poet who was loved and admired by all who met him. He is survived by his fiancée, Arlene Jones of Fredericksburg, sister, Kathy Comstock of New Hampshire, Carole Miller of Hershey, and a son, John, Jr. He also leaves behind three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday evening, February 9, 2011, at 7 p.m. in the Hoover Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Hershey. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until time of service. Final resting place will be in Detroit Cemetery, Detroit, Maine. The family would like to thank all of the team of nurses and doctors who provided so much support and care during John's stay at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
