Montague WESTPORT, CT After a courageous three-year battle with cancer, Joan Lucille Hoffman Montague, dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully December 15, 2011, at the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Joan will be greatly missed by her loving husband, Richard (Dick) Henry Montague of Westport, Conn.; and devoted children and spouses, Kimberly Jo Weinstein of Phoenix, Ariz., Richard Hugh and Peggy Montague of Manchester, Vt., and Elizabeth Ann and Robert Nabholz of Larchmont, N.Y. The joy of her life, Joan's 10 grandchildren, Harrison, Joanna, and Sam Weinstein, William, Tess, and Kathleen Montague, and James, Henry, Richard, and Eleanor Nabholz, will remember Joan for the joy she created everywhere around her. She was predeceased by her mother, Dorothy Hoffman Sonon, and her beloved stepfather, Hubert Sonon. Joan was born in 1932, in Brickerville, and was raised in Palmyra with her siblings, Yvonne Sonon Carmany and Roger Sonon. After graduating from Palmyra High School with distinguished honors, Joan soon met the love of her life, Lieutenant Dick Montague, who was stationed at Indiantown Gap prior to his departure for Korea. After a whirlwind romance, Dick and Joan were married on June 28, 1952. A dedicated soldier's wife, Joan supported her new husband through the Korean War, writing a letter every single day until Dick returned. Presiding over the unmarried graduate students at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, Dick and Joan enjoyed the post-war years, working hard, surrounded by new friends. Joan's exceptional organizational skills were quickly put to use by the University of Pennsylvania's Medical Center Rehabilitation Unit - the first Rehabilitation Facility in the United States - as the Head Administrator. Enjoying the medical environment, Joan's medical administrative career spanned decades and benefited numerous local dental and medical practices. After living in Middletown, Ohio, Scarsdale, N.Y., and Wilbraham, Mass., Dick and Joan settled in Westport, Conn., to raise their children. A lifelong contributor, Joan supported the Westport School System and the Westport Playhouse, was a member of the Westport Women's Club, and a 50-year member of the Greens Farms Congregational Church. For the past 30 years, Dick and Joan have loved living on Long Island Sound, where Joan's gardening skills were honed, creating exceptional beachscapes that were enjoyed year round. In addition to her renowned cooking skills, Joan was also noted for her antiquing savvy, avid reading, and exciting travel agendas. With annual trips to Aruba and Hawaii, Joan developed friends from around the world, who enjoyed her special and kind attention. A memorial service celebrating Joan's life will be held in Brickerville this April, when she will be buried in the family plot. Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road East, Wesport, Conn., is assisting the family with arrangements.
