M. shabodeho@aol.com December 27, 2011, 8:00 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on December 24, 2011 Elizabeth Royer Neff Elizabeth Royer Neff Wife of the late Dr. Charles Neff, went into the morning of heavenly joy on December 21, 2011. She went from the loving embrace of her family and friends who cared for her at 551 Hemlock Lane, Lebanon PA into the glad welcome awaiting her. Elizabeth was born on Christmas Day in 1914 in Orrville, OH to pastor I.W. Royer and Christina Neuhauser Royer. There she grew with her two sisters in the nurture of her family and the church. She graduated from Goshen College in Goshen, IN and became a teacher in the public school system in her Ohio home and also in Baltimore, MD where her husband was in medical school. Afterwards they lived and worked in beautiful Harford County Maryland; Dr. Neff served as a physician in rural practice with his wife's devoted help. This was the birthplace of their daughter Christina and son John Timothy. Because of family health problems, they moved to California's warmer climate. There they provided a home for Elizabeth's elderly parents and Dr. Neff entered his residency in psychiatry. In 1972, at the call of Philhaven Hospital, they moved to the lovely Lebanon Valley and took up residence in Cornwall. It was in this area, rich in Pennsylvania history, that she discovered her Royer lineage dating back to land purchased from William Penn's sons in the early 1700's. As a wife, mother and homemaker, Elizabeth was devoted to everyone who walked through her door. She was a gracious hostess, delighting in children and young people and in happy gatherings around the table. She resourced young mother's groups, sharing her great concern and investment in the value of the family and the home. She was a faithful and enthusiastic member of Gingrich's Mennonite Church. Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Charles Neff; by her sisters, Dr. Mary Royer and Katherine Royer; and by an infant son, John Timothy. She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Christina Neff Okamoto and Dr. Jeffrey Okamoto, in whose home she spent her last years; by a devoted grandson Stephen Okamoto and his wife, Cassie Okamoto; as well as a dear host of nieces and nephews and even a great great great nephew. Her farewell service will be held at Gingrich's Mennonite Church, 100 Forney Road, Lebanon, PA, 17042; phone (717) 274-1521 on Saturday, December 31. It will open with a time of visiting and fellowship, breakfast and music from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The formal service will begin at 12:00, with a graveside ceremony to follow at Gingrich's Church cemetery. Gifts of remembrance may be sent for the purchase of Bibles for the prayer room and books for the children's and adolescents' units at Philhaven Hospital; Attention Development Office, P.O. Box 550, Mount Gretna, PA 17064. This poem, written by Elizabeth, reflects her life of faith and love and prayer: On our earthly journey there are many changing landscapes. Sometimes we are in high Alpine meadows, sunlit and strewn with flowers. Sometimes our road winds through deep dark canyons. But Jesus is with us in both the meadows and the canyons. He left the breathtaking beauty of the Heavenly Meadows to walk the dusty roads of earth- And then to tread the darkest loneliest canyon of rejection, shame and THE CROSS- rising gloriously to deliver us from the evil one. Now, forever free forgiven and safe, we can ascend into the boundless beauty and joy of the Highest Meadows in the shining company of the angels and the redeemed With Jesus! Arrangements are being handled by Grose Funeral Home, Inc., 358 W. Washington Ave., Myerstown, PA 17067.
