A life-long champion of service to the community and to countless people in central Pennsylvania, she touched many lives in a positive way by providing service in the healthcare profession, political leadership, teaching in the schools, and through her devotion to the church. By the mid-1980's she became an LPN and worked in healthcare facilities throughout the Lebanon area as well as for a time in Florida. Well into her 80's, Thelma worked as a nurse specializing in in-home care in Lebanon. She was a passionately involved political volunteer, working with both the Democratic Party and, toward the end of her life, the Republican Party as a district committee chair of elections. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd of Lebanon. She is survived by a brother, Orlando Shalley of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Robin Pape of Martin, Tenn., and Beverly Harris of Lebanon; five grandchildren, Mark Simmons, Todd, Malik, Roger, and Danny; and six great- grandchildren.
