Rhoads, Sr., 64, died Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at his residence. He was the husband of Janice L. Nelson Rhoads, to whom he was married 44 years on June 17, 2011. Born in Lebanon, on June 9, 1947, he was the son of Mabel I. Harnish Rhoads of Myerstown and the late Alfred E. Rhoads. He was a 1965 graduate of ELCO High School and served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. He was employed at GTE Telephone Co., Myerstown, for many years, retiring in 1996. After his retirement, he worked for Hurst Landscaping, Stouchsburg, for many years. He was a member of the Little Swatara Beagle Club, Richland American Legion, lifetime member of the National Rifle Assn. and the North American Hunting Club. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trapper. He was well known for his dog training. He trained obedience at the Lebanon County Humane Society and trained dogs for the Ephrata Police Force. He took pride in his property, garden, and canning his famous V-8. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a daughter, Jodi L., wife of Trevit Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sons, John C. Rhoads, Jr. of Myerstown, and Jamie D., husband of Lashonda Rhoads of Richland; grandchildren, Abigail Talbert, Tyler J. Rhoads, Hunter C. Rhoads, and Austin L. Rhoads; sisters, Sandra K., wife of Harry James of Richland, and Linda M., wife of Cork Meyer of Schaefferstown; and a niece, Kelly, wife of Rick Smith of Myerstown. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from Grose Funeral Home, 358 W. Washington Ave., Myerstown. Viewing Friday at 1 p.m. Interment at Schaefferstown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
