Gilbert Edward Robel, U.S. Army, 80, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 27, 2011 at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center. He was born Monday, January 12, 1931, in Shamokin, to the late Edward T. and Mary (Roginski) Robel. People often nicknamed him Gibby, Gil, the Colonel, the Pope, or Rabbi. Mr. Robel was a Department of Defense employee retiring in June 1986 after 30 years of service. He also served as a member of the armed services, retiring as LTC in January 1984. He actively served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. His last active duty assignment was as Chief of Staff, 78th Division Training Command in Edison, N.J. While in the Army, Mr. Robel attended the following courses: Attended Army Advanced Adjutant General Course - Fort Harrison, Ind.; Attended Army Advanced Transportation Course - Fort Eustis, Va.; Command and General Staff School - Fort Leavenworth, Kan. After military retirement, Mr. Robel became Vice President and Director of Human Resources at Credit Services of America in Lodi, N.J. where he retired in 1986. Mr. Robel was active in his church serving as past President of the Holy Name Society, Chairman of the Festival committee and Fish Fry committee, head usher, member of the Knights of Columbus, and member of the parish council. He was also one of the founding fathers of the church and was instrumental in establishing the meditation room. Mr. Robel was also a member of the Senior Spirit Group at Holy Spirit, Reserve Officer's Association and Palmyra American Legion. Mr. Robel was an avid TV fan with an interest in war movies and westerns. He was also a huge Phillies and Eagles fan. Mr. Robel is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rose Marie Robel. He has one daughter, Mary Ellen Robel of Alexandria, Va. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 1 at 9:30 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Spirit, 245 W. Pine St., Palmyra, 17078 with Father James F. Podlesny as Celebrant. Burial with full military honors will follow in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Family and friends are invited for viewing on Tuesday, May 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra, and from 9 a.m. until time of the service at the church.
