M. shabodeho@aol.com February 21, 2011, 10:47 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on February 18, 2011 Doris Lyon Rose LEBANON Doris Lyon Rose passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, in Hershey Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Born Dorotea Margherita Lyon on July 27, 1922, in the free State of Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia), she was the only daughter of Wilhelmina Marguerite de Thierry of Sromjlé, Austria, and Fred Marshall Lyon of Butler. Doris spent her first 18 years in Europe, living with her parents in Paris, France, and graduating from the Lycée Sainte Barbe in 1939. She also studied in Zurich, Switzerland, and in England on the Isle of Wight. After the fall of France to Hitler, her family traveled to Lisbon, Portugal, to board the oceanliner S/S Exeter bound for New York and then to Butler, where she lived for many years. Of late, she spent her winters in the homes of her children. She was married for 38 years to Gail L. Rose, who died in 1981. Doris was extremely active in her community and church. After raising her family on a lovely farm near Connoquenessing, she enrolled in college, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Slippery Rock University in 1994 at the age of 72, with a major in English and a minor in French. Doris is survived by four children, Dr. Lawrence Lyon Rose (Connie) of Basking Ridge, N.J., Stephanie Rose Morris (Samuel III) of Port Jefferson, N.Y., and Catherine Rose Zackey and Amy Rose Wissinger (David), both of Lebanon. She also is survived by 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Arcaro, Daniel Morris, and Laura Stengel, Andrew and Stephen Rose, Abigail Ruez, Alexis, Diana, and Meredith Zackey, Joshua Wissinger, and Jill Fouse; and six great-grandchildren, Cassandra and Katelyn Arcaro, Lucille, Marguerite, and Samuel Morris, and Ruby Wissinger. A son, Dr. Christopher Charles Rose of Pittsburgh, preceded her in death in 1996. Services will be held in Butler. Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra, 17078 has been entrusted with the arrangements.
