Schauer, 70, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Heart of Florida Medical Center, after fighting a brave battle with cancer. He was the husband of Sara (Schauweker) Schauer. Born in Lebanon, on January 29, 1941, he was the son of the late John P. and Esther I. (Smith) Schauer. After high school, he served 4 years in the Navy as a musician. Leo graduated from Johnson & Wales College. He worked as a deli manger for Almacs Supermarkets in Rhode Island for 26 years. Later he worked for Laidlaw in Coventry, R.I., as a school bus driver. He was a member of St. Faustina Church, Clermont Fla. He volunteered at Outpost 27 Visitors' Center. He dearly loved spending summers at Laurel Ridge campground in Connecticut and was active on the membership committee for many years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Susan Gregoire (Bob) of North Smithfield, R.I.; Catherine Ames (David) of Burrillville, R.I.; Leo Schauer Jr. (Kim) of Exeter, R.I.; Stephen Lafreniere (Pam) of Merritt Island, Fla.; Laurie Harp (David) of Derry, N.H.; and Darren Lafreniere of North Providence, R.I.; four grandchildren, Amanda Christiansen, Thomas Ames, Samantha Ames, and Evan Harp; brothers, Gary Schauer (Sandy) and Howard Schauer (Mary Ann); and sister, Joan Landis (Dale [deceased]), all of Lebanon. He was the brother of the late John Dissinger (Vicki) of Lebanon. A Memorial Mass will be held in Florida at St. Faustina Church on June 15, 2011. Burial will be in the Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell. National Cremation Society is in charge of arrangements.
