Shope, 87, passed away suddenly on Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, Palmyra. He was married to Annie S. (Hetrick) Shope for 48 years prior to her death in 1991. He is currently married to Frances (Rodeffer) Shope. He was born Thursday, March 13, 1924, on the family farm in Middletown, to the late Eli C. and Pearl (Yetter) Shope. In his early years, Donald was a Milton Hershey farmer and houseparent, a self-employed farmer, and a school bus driver. In the mid-1950's, he developed the communities of Shope Gardens and later Colonel Burd Estates. He was the founder and former co-owner of Shope Gardens Construction. He worked with the Corps of Engineers during the 1972 flood. He had been active with the Lower Swatara Sewer Authority, Lower Swatara Fire Company, Highspire Fire Company, Middletown Borough, and Lower Swatara Water Control Board. He had served as a board member of the Highspire Tinian Manor Swim Club and had been a former member of the West Shore Chamber of Commerce. He was also active with the Conewago Church of the Brethren, where he had served as superintendent, Sunday School teacher, chair of the Pastoral Board, and a board member for the Atlantic Northeast District. He worked on disaster relief mission trips in the past to Haiti, Honduras, Mississippi, and Albany, Ga. He helped initiate the development of the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, served as an initial board member, chair of the LVBH Building Committee, and a volunteer bus driver for many years. He was a current resident of the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Shirley A. Deichert, wife of Richard of Elizabethtown, Donald J. Shope and wife, Betsy of Elizabethtown, Faye A. Maulfair, wife of Pastor Paul, Jr. of Middletown, and Ray E. Shope of Harrisburg; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lehman Shope of Middletown. He was predeceased by four brothers, Arthur, Robert, Clair, and Harry Shope. A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, DiMatteo Worship Center, 1200 Grubb Road, Palmyra 17078, with Pastor Paul Maulfair, Jr. and Chaplain Norman D. Yeater officiating. Family and friends are invited for visitation on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rothermel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra 17078, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lebanon Valley Brethren Home. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Harrisburg.
