USAF (Stix), 85, died Monday, August 8, 2011 in Claremont Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Carlisle. He was born on April 27, 1926 in Steelton, son of the late Marko and Agnes Zelko Slabonik, and was the widower of Helen Gorse Slabonik. He is survived by his children, Helen Marie and her husband, Hiram Richards, Kathleen Ann and her husband, Paul Nenninger, William Mark and his wife, Patricia, James Richard, Mary Slabonik Sill, Agnes, John Gorse and his wife, Margo, Barbara Jean and her husband, Steve Reitz, Theresa Marie and her husband, David Salinger, Mark Christopher and his wife, Maria, Frances Inez, Matthew Paul and his wife, Linda, Anne Marie and her fiance, Ronald J. Myers, Jr., and Luke Joseph and his wife, Kelly; grandchildren, Julie Bartels, Rebecca Nenninger, Joseph Nenninger, David Slabonik and his wife, Rachel, Daniel Slabonik, Katherine Slabonik, Angela Slabonik, Jessica Towson and her husband, Matthew, Erin Brady, Jacob Slabonik, Stephanie Reitz, Katherine Steckbeck and her husband, Adam, Jason Reitz, Michael Salinger, Hannah Salinger, Joshua Salinger, Tracie and Sean Houston, Sara Slabonik, Emily Slabonik, Suzanne Slabonik and Nicole Slabonik; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob and Abriel Bartels, Ramona Slabonik, Julia Rose Towson, Charlotte Towson, Lillian Towson, Trystan Steckbeck and Brennan Houston; his sister, Mary Ann Sheriff; close family friends, Gina Chiloro and Lori Richardson; longtime caregivers and nieces, Cheryl and Krissy Slabonik; and many more nieces and nephews also survive William. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mark, Rudolf and James; two grandsons, Kelly Lee Salinger and James William Salinger. William graduated from Steelton High School and Penn State University, where he played both football and wrestled. After high school, Bill enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a tail gunner in the German Theater for one year. On his return from WWII, he went to Penn State and participated in ROTC and graduated with a commission and rank of Second Lieutenant. He was also Deputy Commander of the US Military Advisory Group to the Vietnamese Air Force during the Vietnam War, and spent a year tour of duty there. He was awarded the Bronze Star upon his return. He served as Commander of Air Force Recruiting in New Cumberland until his retirement. William spent a total of active and reserve time of 27 years in the military and retired in 1970. He taught three years at Dauphin County Vocational Technical School, where he was a History and Phys. Ed. teacher and Dean of Students. He also retired from the State Dept. of Welfare, and was co-founder and President of BWB Inc., until his retirement in 1999. William was a devout Roman Catholic and was a member of various groups over the years-St. Aloysius Lodge No. 42, KSKJ, Knights of Columbus, Serra Club, Catholic Men's Group, Pennsylvanians for Human Life, member of the former St. Peter Roman Catholic Parish, Steelton, and a member of Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Parish. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in Prince of Peace-Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. James M. Lyons, his Pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, with full military honors. A viewing will be held on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. in Wiedeman Funeral Home, 357 S. Second St., Steelton.
