Small, 65, died Wednesday, December 14, 2011, in the Lebanon VA Medical Center Hospice. Born November 24, 1946, in Lebanon, he was a son of the late Kermit U. and Mary H. (Hershey) Small. A 1964 graduate of Lebanon High School, Ed was President of his Senior Class and National Honor Society, Treasurer of Student Council, member of the German Club, Hi-Y Club, and the band, which in 1962 participated in the Mason City, Iowa, Music Man Competition and placed third. He also participated in the Lebanon High School Oratorical Contest, was voted Best Personality and Most Courteous of the males in his class, and lived the 1964 class motto "Not for ourselves, but for all." Following his 1968 Elizabethtown College graduation with a B.S. in Biology/Pre- Med, he served as an operating room technician in the U.S. Army, receiving an Honorable Discharge in December 1971. Following his military service, Ed worked as a Real Estate Specialist for the Housing and Redevelopment Authority of Lebanon County (1972-1974), Zoning Administrator for Lebanon County Planning Department (1974-1986), Administrative Assistant for North Londonderry Township (1986-1989), and Management Director for Eastern Land and Resources Corp. (1989-1991). In March 2008, he became the Director of Community Development for the Township of Derry, after 16 years as Assistant Director. A life-long member of the Lebanon Church of the Brethren, he was instrumental in writing the church's Faith Statement and Constitution. He served as Head Usher, Worship Leader, Church Board Chair, and on every committee in the church, including Pastoral Search Committee, Pastoral Relations Committee, and Deacon Board. Ed was also very active with the Lebanon County Chapter of the American Red Cross, serving numerous terms on the Board of Directors since 1981 and as a member of the Executive Committee and Budget Committee, Chairman of the Program Committee, and 1991 Chairman of the Board. Surviving are his wife, Donna Waldron Small; stepsons, Bryan D., husband of Jaclyn Waldron of Middletown, and Christopher J., husband of Sally Waldron of Birmingham, Ala.; stepdaughter, Cheryl L. Waldron of Palmyra; brother, Michael H., husband of Jeanie Small of Palmyra; nephew, Mark R. Small of Palmyra; niece, Julie A. Small of Brisbane, Australia; and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at Lebanon Church of the Brethren, 400 Locust St., Lebanon, preceded by a visitation from 10:30 a.m. Interment with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
