Paul Junior Spangler, 86, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the Golden Age Living Center in Stover, Mo. He was born on November 21, 1924, in York, the son of Paul Henry and Margaret Rebecca Heckert Spangler. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served during World War II. He did his undergraduate studies at Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania. He then did graduate studies at the University of Ohio and the University of Kansas and he received a PhD from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service but was then employed by the Smithsonian Institute as an Independent Research Biologist for over 40 years. On March 24, 1948, he was married to Phyllis Miller in York. She preceded him in death on June 26, 2010. They had lived in Warsaw, Mo., since 2002, and before that they lived in the Washington, D.C. area for 45 years. He is survived by one son, Richard Spangler, of Warsaw; and a sister, Patti Eckenrode, of Minnatonka, Minn. Paul's wishes were to be cremated. Cremation was at the Kaysinger Crematory in Warsaw with arrangements under the direction of Reser Funeral Home. No services are scheduled.
