Speece ANNVILLE From the loving arms of his faithful wife, Ronald Michael Speece entered Heaven on March 15, 2011. He was 70 years old. Born on November 6, 1940, Ronald graduated from Palmyra High School. He was a car salesman for 28 years at Frederick Cadillac-Chevrolet, Inc. In 2010 Ronald (Ron) was inducted into the Lebanon Valley Sports Hall of Fame. Ronald had dedicated over 49 years to the sport of ice hockey and was known as the 'Daddy of Hockey' by those with whom he had played or coached. He began playing ice hockey in 7th grade in the youth program at Hershey Sports Arena and became one of only two players at that time to advance to the Hamilton Red Wings and Detroit Industrial League in Junior A hockey, playing with amateur teams in Lancaster, York and Morgantown, and two years of semi-pro hockey with the Washington Chiefs. Ron organized the Seltzer Packers serving as player-coach. He also founded the H. A. Boyd Bugs hockey club. In 1981, Ron became part of the Hershey Packers which played up and down the east coast, establishing an eight year record. He then started a youth program sponsored by the National Hockey League. Upon retirement he refereed and established the Hershey Youth Referees program. He was the Referee- in-Chief and supervisor in Central Pennsylvania, and an evaluator for U.S. Hockey. In more recent years, Ron enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events, and also University of Mississippi football games in Oxford, watching his wife's nephew play fullback for Ole Miss. In the walkway of champions at Ole Miss, Ron's stepdaughter, Monique, placed a brick inscribed in his honor: 'Ron Speece, #1 Dad, Go Rebs'. Ronald was predeceased by his parents, Mervin and Dorothy Speece; and granddaughter, Jordyn Beth Speece. He is survived by his childhood sweetheart, Nadine R. Donley, as they would have celebrated 21 years of marriage in April. Ron was an extraordinary loving father of three sons, Gregory S. (husband of Amy), Hummelstown; Jeffrey S. (husband of Michelle), Palmyra; Douglas S. (husband of Leesa), Lebanon; and a loved stepdaughter, Monique M. (wife of Daniel G. Groff), Manheim. He is survived by his sister, Jeanne Lightner; brother, Ralph S.; and grandchildren, Zachary, Graham, Alexander, Sophia, Leah Nadine ("Smita"), and Jaxson. Ron was a member of Masonic Steelton-Swatara Lodge. He was a regular attender of Bible Fellowship Church, and the Military Chapel, Fort Indiantown Gap. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2011, with visitation prior from 9:30 a.m. at Bible Fellowship Church, 1635 Mill Road, Lebanon.
