Staver PALMYRA Kenneth Winfield Staver died Sunday, February 20, 2011, at the age of 91. Born August 20, 1919, he was a son of the late Carl A. and Mary (Winfield) Staver of Shippensburg. He grew up in the Shippensburg area spending much of his time at his grandparent's farm. After graduating from Shippensburg University, he enlisted in the World War II effort and served as a field artillery forward observer in the 87th Division of the 3rd Army in the European campaign, earning a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After the war he entered Penn State on the G.I. Bill, where he earned a degree in agricultural education and met Anna Buganich whom he married in 1948. They moved to their farm near Palmyra in 1952 where they raised sheep and gardened. His career in education began as a vocational agriculture teacher at Hershey High School followed by Kutztown High School. From 1960-1986 Kenneth was an integral part of Lower Dauphin High School as a guidance counselor and Dean of Students. After retiring he was elected to two terms on the Lower Dauphin School Board. An active participant in Pennsylvania agriculture, Kenneth was a member of the Farm Bureau, PA Sheep and Wool Growers, and the PA Livestock Association. He also served on the Dauphin County Cooperative Extension Board. A long time supporter of the Future Farmers of America, he was named as an Honorary Keystone and Honorary American Farmer. Along with his wife Anna, he showed purebred Dorset sheep at the PA Farm Show for over 40 years. Together, he and Anna were honored as the PA Livestock Association Hall of Fame Inductee in 2002. An enthusiastic community member, Kenneth served on the East Hanover Planning Commission and the Manada Area Nature Conservancy. He also was active in the Optimist Club of Hummelstown. For over half a century, Kenneth worshipped at the Gravel Hill United Methodist Church and was a lifelong teacher, mentor, and friend of his Sunday School Class. Despite failing health he had made plans to attend class on the day of his passing. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna in 2009, and by his younger brothers, Charles W. and Glenn A. Staver of Shippensburg. He is survived by his children, Charles Paul Staver, husband of Jan Salick, and their children, Carla and Benjamin Staver, Julia Ann Staver, wife of John M. Pifer, and their daughter, Sophia Pifer, and Kenneth W. Staver, Jr., husband of Lorie Winchell Staver, and their children, Hilary, Charlotte, and Warren Staver.
