M. shabodeho@aol.com March 24, 2011, 8:32 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on March 22, 2011 James Monroe Stover Sr. PALMYRA Jim Stover, 83, formerly of Hershey, died peacefully at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home on Saturday, March 19, 2011. He was the husband of Della Rice Stover who was at his side and to whom he was married for nearly 62 years. Jim was devoted to his family, his church and his community. He was born in Hershey, on January 15, 1928, to the late Monroe C. and Lillian C. Stover. He graduated from Hershey High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he attended and graduated from Hershey Junior College. He was part owner of Stover's Candies founded by his father. He was a sales representative for various automotive industry suppliers, a real estate agent for Jack Gaughen Realtor, and most recently worked part-time for the Hershey Pharmacy. He was a superintendent of the Evangelical United Brethren (now First United Methodist) Adult Sunday School, church board member, a teacher for the Dan Lewis class, a member of the church Trinity choir, and played Andrew in numerous presentations of The Last Supper. He was a founding member and treasurer for over 40 years for the Hershey Food Bank and Community Outreach (formerly Derry Township Social Ministry), past president of the Derry Township School Board, past president of the Palmyra Rotary Club, a member of the Hershey Rotary Club and a Paul Harris fellow. He enjoyed playing the trombone in high school and many years thereafter. Like his father, Jim loved playing golf. "Jimmie" was listed in Ripley's Believe It or Not for having a hole in one at the age of seven on #7 of the Hershey Spring Creek golf course, (formerly the Juvenile GC), was a four year letterman in high school, and was paired with and tied Arnold Palmer in his senior year of high school at the Pennsylvania High School championship golf competition at State College. Jim was a faithful supporter of his sons' and grandchildren's sporting events. He was also an avid fan of Philadelphia sports, Joe Paterno, and Penn State football. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sister, Janice Rehkamp; his brother, Glenn A. Stover; and his beloved son, Jack W. Stover. Surviving are a brother, Ronald C. Stover and his wife Shirley of Hershey; three sons and seven grandchildren - son Monty and wife Mary Eileen (Kahl) Stover of Block Island, R.I. and their children Rebecca C. and her husband Bogdan Suciu of Lynn, Mass., Edward J. of Manhattan Beach, Calif. and David M. of Sydney, Australia; son Frederick R. and Vicki Ritter Stover of Hershey, and their sons Jeffrey M. and his wife Karen (Foltz) Stover of Hershey and Jonathan P. of Hershey; son Charles N. and wife Christy Myers Stover of Hershey and their sons Benjamin J. and Jack W. of Hershey. Two great-grandchildren are on the way. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jim's services at the First United Methodist Church in Hershey on Friday. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. A luncheon for all is planned for after the service at 12 noon in the social room in the church basement followed by a private burial at Hershey Cemetery.
