M. shabodeho@aol.com January 21, 2011, 6:23 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on January 19, 2011 Emily Sue Whitman JONESTOWN Emily Sue Whitman, 78, died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon, on January 12, 2011, after a brief illness. Born September 15, 1932, in Newport News, Va., (Morrison), to Bertha Blanche Stroud and Clifton Clay Stroud, she graduated from Warwick High School in 1949. She married William A. Whitman on November 8, 1958. She spent her career working for the Department of the Navy in Yorktown, Va.; Washington, D.C.; and Concord, Calif., until her retirement in 1995. She was a resident of Jonestown, where she was an active volunteer at the Lebanon County Historical Society and served on their Museum Committee. She was also a volunteer at the Cornwall Iron Furnace, the Friends of Monroe Valley Chapel and a contributor to the Jonestown Community Park. She will be especially remembered for her devotion to her beloved husband, William A. Whitman, and their love of his alma mater, Virginia Tech and its football team. Survivors include a brother, Glenn Stroud of Devon; two nephews, Clifton C. Stroud II of Warrenton, Va., and Harold Wilson Stroud of Stillwater, Okla.; and a godson, William Orr IV of Lebanon. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifton C. Stroud and Bertha Blanche Stroud; a brother, Clifton C. Stroud Jr.; and her husband, William A. Whitman. Burial and graveside services conducted by the Rev. Dede Parrish will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Greenlawn Cemetery, 2700 Parish Avenue, Newport News, Va.
