M. shabodeho@aol.com August 22, 2011, 8:37 am Published in Lebanon Daily News on August 20, 2011 Edwin J. Zarek PALMYRA Edwin J. Zarek, 71, died on Thursday, August 18, 2011, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Nancy Ackerson Zarek for 43 years. Mr. Zarek was born in Mt. Carmel, on October 21, 1939, and was the son of the late Edwin Zarek and Bertha Kulick Zarek. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1952. He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1957, and in 1960 earned a Bachelor's Degree from Bloomsburg University. He was awarded a Master's Degree from Temple University in 1966. Mr. Zarek began teaching at the old South Lebanon Township High School in 1960. In 1966, he moved to the new Cedar Crest High School, where he continued teaching until his retirement in 1996. During his time at Cedar Crest, he served as Chairman of the English Department for 20 years. Additionally, he taught as an adjunct to the English Department at Millersville University for 17 years. Mr. Zarek is a past president of the Cornwall-Lebanon Educators Association, was elected by his fellow teachers to the Lebanon County Education Honor Society, and belonged to several other professional organizations. Ed, who lived in Mt. Gretna for 38 years, enjoyed music - mostly jazz and classical - and played piano professionally for a number of years. He was a fan of both the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State football, but baseball was always his favorite sport, and he was a most passionate fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. In addition to his wife, Mr. Zarek is survived by daughters, Christina of Harrisburg and Leah of Palmyra; as well as grandchildren, Ethan and Ella, both of Palmyra. Visitation with the family will be held on Monday August 22, 2011, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory, 618 E.
