Betz, 88, of Messiah Village in Mechanicsburg, passed away Friday, March 23, 2012, at Harrisburg Hospital. Born July 11, 1923, in Palmyra, he was the son of the late Moses and Lillie (Rissinger) Betz. Lester was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Chambersburg, a 1941 graduate of Elizabethtown High School, and a 1951 Engineering Graduate of Drexel University. He retired in 1980 from U.S. Civil Service, having worked for the U.S. Army Transportation Command, Olmstead Air Force Base, and DESCOM, Letterkenny Army Depot. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II with the Army Air Corps. He was a member of AARP, NARFE, VFW (Charles Nitterhouse Post), the American Legion (Burt J. Asper Post 46), and Trout Unlimited. Surviving are his beloved wife, M. Lorraine Blasser Betz, whom he married in 1946; daughters, Jeanette, wife of David Bickford of Fredericksburg, and Susan, wife of Larry Dittmann of Middletown; sisters, Joann of Elizabethtown, wife of the late Rev. Russell Mengel, and Clara, wife of Kenneth Reighard of Elizabethtown; two grandsons, Andre D. Powell and wife, Alison of Arvada, Colo., and Holmes C. Powell and wife, Jessica of Palmyra; two great-granddaughters, Chloe and Caitlin Powell; a sister-in-law, Lois Betz; a brother-in-law, Stuart Madara; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant twin brother, Luther, as well as his brothers, Dale and James L. Betz; and by his sister, Ardell Betz Madara. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at the Messiah Village Chapel, with viewing from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Burial will take place in the Grandview Cemetery, Annville.
