Dietrich PALMYRA Marie Olga Dietrich (nee Ohlson) died peacefully on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, surrounded by her family at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. She was 91 years old. She will be remembered for her devotion to her faith and family, her keen mind and educational interests, and her community service. Born in Lynn, Mass., on January 14, 1921, Marie grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she attended Prospect Heights High School, formerly Girls' Commercial High School, Class of 1939. Marie graduated, cum laude, in 1943 from Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y., with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She helped found the college's second sorority, Theta Pi Epsilon, now known as Alpha Omicron Pi, and served as its first President. She was an active member of the French club and sang in the college choir. After college, Marie pursued graduate work in history at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. In 1944, Marie married her loving husband of 49 years, "Gerry," the late Rev. Gerhard G. Dietrich. They wed at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Steelton, where her husband had just embarked upon his ministry. As the wife of a pastor, Marie embraced all the opportunities and challenges of that role while becoming a most loving mother. With two young daughters in tow, Marie and her husband relocated to Germany in 1949 where he served as Director of Social Services to WWII refugees, sponsored by the Lutheran World Federation. While there, the couple had two more children and Mrs. Dietrich taught preschool and kindergarten in the American military community. She also aided her husband in efforts to relocate refugees. The couple returned to the States in 1955 to reside in Palmyra, where Rev. Dietrich served as pastor at Palm Lutheran Church. As her family continued to grow, Marie also did her work as an educator. She began teaching 1st grade at Derry Township Elementary School in 1963, and retired in 1995 at age 74. She was the first woman elected to the Palmyra School Board (1976 to 1982). In her late seventies she audited several foreign language courses at Millersville. She appreciated the arts and enjoyed traveling. Marie, an avid reader, would be pleased to know her book club selected her most recent book suggestion in her honor. Marie Olga Dietrich was preceded in death by her husband, The Rev. Gerhard G. Dietrich, and her parents, Otto Theodore and Mary Constance Ohlson (nee Johnson). She is survived by seven children and 22 grandchildren: Carla (Dr. William) Huffman and their children, Dr. Christopher Huffman, Amy (Tripp) Donnelly, Esq., Kirsten (Kahreem) Hurley, Ingrid (Dr. Karl) Bergmann, Viking (Maria) Huffman, and Stefan Huffman; Kristin Catalani and her children, Anthony and Danielle; Linda (Ron) Eaton and their children, Lauren (Kevin) Imes and Meghan (Aaron) Bricker; Lance Dietrich (Paula) Dietrich; Marlies (Jeff) Patterson and their children, Lars, Lance, Jeffrey, Marie, and Gerhard; Gerhard Dietrich, Esq. (Tami) Dietrich and their children, Margit, Hart, and Anja; Rev. Viking (Marissa) Dietrich and their children, Eoin, Bronwen, Isaac, and Margaret; and six great-grandchildren Autumn, Noah, Weston, Brianna, Benjamin, and Finn. Although Marie began life as an only child, she departed it with a large, loving family at her side. Marie Dietrich's friends and family will miss her deeply.
