Charles William Donahue, 88, passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2012, in the Hershey Medical Center. He was born on March 21, 1924, in Philadelphia, to parents, Charles Patrick and Edith Haines Donahue. Charles retired as the Executive Vice President of Philadelphia Gear Corporation (Palmyra Industries), and was the former Chief Executive Officer of Dechert Dynamics, Palmyra. He was a 1941 graduate of North East High School, Philadelphia. Charles was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II on the U.S.S. Weeden, and enjoyed attending his naval reunions annually. He was active at Derry Presbyterian Church, serving as a former Elder and Chairman of the Finance Committee, and member of the Seniors and Shepherds Groups. Charles was a member of Brownstone Lodge #666, F&AM, a 32nd degree member of the Harrisburg Consistory, and Zembo Shrine, Harrisburg. Along with his late wife, Charles was a world traveler and fan of culture and the arts, and patron of the Hershey Symphony and Hershey Theatre. He was a former member of the Hershey Country Club, loved Philadelphia sports and the Hershey Bears, and enjoyed bowling. He had played for the Lighthouse Soccer Club, Philadelphia. Charles was an avid youth athletic coach and advocate for youth sports. He was proud to live in Hershey and serve its community, but most important his world revolved around his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by six children, Charles W. Donahue, Jr. (wife Lynn) of Las Vegas, Nev., Denise Johnston (husband Michael) of Haddon Heights, N.J., Hena Markley of State College, Michael P. Donahue (wife Wendy) of Lawrenceville, N.J., Margaret L. Donahue (husband Scott Brandeburg) of Hershey, and Christine M. Wolfe (husband Wilson) of Harrisburg; his 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, E. Christyne McCaughy Donahue, on January 22, 2012; and a son, Edwin A. Donahue on November 28, 2011. A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 16, 2012, at 1 p.m. in the Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey 17033 with The Rev. Dr. Richard L. Houtz and The Rev. Dr. Marie L. Buffaloe, his pastors, officiating. Inurnment with military will be in Derry Presbyterian Church Cemetery immediately following the service. Friends and relatives will be received following the inurnment. Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 W. Main St., Hummelstown, is handling the arrangements.
