Gigler, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family after an 18 month battle with esophageal cancer. Born in New Kensington, on December 4, 1932, he was the son of Frank Frederick and Fredrika (Kaalund) Gigler. Don was a 1951 graduate of Arnold High School (Arnold, Pa.). He attended Bob Jones University in South Carolina, and graduated from Marquette University (Wisconsin). In 1961, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine (PA). He completed post-doctoral training at Eastman Dental Dispensary in Rochester, N.Y., and Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Don also spent a year working in the Department of Anesthesiology at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon. He practiced dentistry in Lebanon since 1964. Don was a member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, American Dental Association, Lebanon Dental Society, Mt. Lebanon Masonic Lodge #226, Steitz Club, Lebanon Country Club, and The Italian Club of Hershey. He was also a Golden Panther for the University of Pittsburgh. Don served his country in the United States Army. He is survived by his wife, Gilda Jean (Hazlett), to whom he was married for 50 years; his three daughters, Susan of Reston, Va., Nancy Evans (husband Brian) of Oak Hill, Va., and Wendy of Baltimore, Md.; and three grandchildren, Jeannie, Tom and Lucy Evans. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Jane Nery of Lower Burrell; Frank F. Gigler, Jr. of Lower Burrell; Barbara Pallone of New Kensington; and Paul William Gigler of Oakmont; as well as 16 nieces and nephews. Don was an avid sports fan who enjoyed traveling with family and friends to many events across the country. He loved the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pitt Panthers, and the Pirates and Penguins. He also enjoyed playing cards, hiking, golfing, traveling and finding new restaurants. Don especially enjoyed telling a good joke and loved to make people laugh. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Monday, May 21, 2012, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 600 S. 12th St., Lebanon at 2 p.m. Family visitation will be held prior to the memorial service, from 12 noon to 2 p.m., also at St. Andrews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in honor of Don to the Esophageal Cancer Action Network. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., is entrusted with the arrangements.
