M. shabodeho@aol.com August 18, 2012, 8:22 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on August 14, 2012 LEBANON Richard Hardy, Commander, United States Navy retired, died on Friday, August 10, 2012 in Lebanon. He was born in Richard City, Tenn. on August 29, 1922, the son of Charles Edson and Marion Faville Hardy. Mr. Hardy attended schools in Richard City and Bethlehem. He graduated from Liberty High School in Bethlehem in 1940. He attended Lehigh University and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1944, in the accelerated class of 1945. He served on the USS New Jersey in the Pacific, during the last year of World War II and in Naval Air fighter squadrons on the USS Kearsarge in Korea, the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt and the USS Randolph. After resigning from the Navy in 1955 he was employed by the Minneapolis Honeywell Corporation in Minneapolis, Minn., from 1955 to 1957, and by the General Electric Company in Pittsfield, Mass., from 1957 to 1986. In Lenox, where he lived until 1988, Mr. Hardy served on the Finance Committee, the Waste Treatment Plant Building Committee, the Kiwanis Club and the United Way of Berkshire County. Mr. Hardy was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, the former Phyllis Kratz of Allentown, whom he married on May 16, 1945. He is survived by three daughters, Andrea Gustafson of Katy, Texas, Paula Howell of Alpharetta, Ga., and Carla Dowd of Lebanon; two sons, Thomas R. Hardy of Waltham, Mass., David R. Hardy of Waccabuc, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, Inc., is in charge of the arrangements. A memorial service will be held at Pleasantview Retirement Community in Manheim on August 27th at 10 a.m. In addition, a graveside service will be held in Lenox, Mass., at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Richard Hardy to the Pleasantview Retirement Community, Manheim, Pa.
