M. shabodeho@aol.com June 21, 2012, 3:22 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on June 9, 2012 Charles R. Hoffman MANHEIM Charles R. "Dick" Hoffman, 87, passed away on Monday, June 4, 2012, at Oak Leaf Manor North, Landisville, where he resided for almost a year. Born in Hershey, Charles was the son of the late John R. Hoffman and Mary Marguerite Krow Hoffman. He was the husband of Margaret "Peg" Henry Hoffman who died in October, 2008. Charles was employed as a purchasing agent and former route driver for the Tasty Baking Company in Philadelphia for 30 years. He retired to Rangeley Lakes, Maine, where he and Peg purchased and managed 13 rental cottages. His love of the sun and the ocean led the couple to Cape May, N.J. and subsequently back to PA after the birth of their granddaughter, Jenna. Charles' hard work ethic and love of his country led him to serve as a U.S. Marine in the Okinawa campaign in World War II as a technical sergeant in communications. Charles was a graduate of Lafayette College, Easton. His life centered on his family and friends. He taught Sunday School and volunteered many hours of time as a church custodian and at the Hershey Historical Society. Charles' competitive nature was evident during his participation in biking and running events and also during varied card games. His family will miss his presence in countless ways, but especially at weekly Sunday dinners that usually ended with a spirited game of 500 Rummy. The family would like to thank the staff at Oak Leaf Manor North for the loving care of their father. Charles is survived by his son, John R. Hoffman II, married to Vicky L (Pryor) Hoffman of Lebanon; his daughter, Sally C. Hoffman Doane, married to Jeffrey R. Doane of Lancaster; one granddaughter, Jenna F. Doane of Philadelphia; one step grandson, Lawrence T. Pryor of North Dakota; and his sister, Marguerite Ann (Hoffman) Reichenbaugh of Hummelstown. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ethel Elizabeth Garman and one brother John R. Hoffman, Jr. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Charles' Life Celebration in the Sun Room at Oak Leaf Manor North, 2901 Harrisburg Pike, Landisville, on Saturday, June 16 at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may visit with the family after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be made in Charles' memory to the American Cancer Society. Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 618 E. Main St., Annville, is assisting the family with arrangements.
