M. shabodeho@aol.com January 22, 2012, 9:49 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on January 19, 2012 Martin F. Horn WERNERSVILLE Martin F. (Marty) Horn died January 17, surrounded by his immediate family as well as the members of his second family, the wonderful caring staff at Wernersville State Hospital. Marty spent the final months of his life enjoying and looking forward to the daily visits from his family as he fought cancer. Born December 15, 1957, Marty grew up on North 6th Avenue in the "East End" of Lebanon, the youngest of 8 children of George and Margaret (Bennethum) Horn. As a boy he sledded on Humpty Dumpty Hill and played sports, especially pick up games of basketball at the Washy playground. He played "war," constructed forts, and made go karts. Summers he vacationed with his extended family at Rehoboth Beach and visited "The Cottage" of his sister at Spring Lake Park. As a teenager and young adult he practiced guitar for many hours with his band "Epitaph" and drove a gold 1979 Dodge Charger which he remembered even in his final days. He fished and hunted, once bringing down a buck with a shotgun slug. In the months before his death he expressed an interest in fishing again and enjoyed going on a final trip to Stoever's Dam. Along with his father and most siblings he rooted for the Eagles and the Phillies. He worked for a time at the Lebanon Tool Company, exhibiting many of the same skills that made his father, George Horn Sr., such a valued worker. He once used his earnings to present a big new refrigerator to his proud mother. He was a 1976 graduate of Lebanon Catholic High School. After high school he began to develop symptoms of schizophrenia, a disease he struggled with the remainder of his life. Marty spent much of the last 30 years at Wernersville State Hospital. His father George, while still alive, visited him religiously at least once a week, and Marty came home for family gatherings. The staff at Wernersville State Hospital treated Marty with heart-felt concern and love for which his family would like to express their utmost gratitude. Marty also appreciated the care he received and in his final week asked to be taken to the bank to pay the staff for all their help. He is survived by brothers, George M. Horn, Jr. and wife, Jeanette, Mike Horn and wife, Elizabeth, Maryland; John Horn and wife, Ada, and Ronald; sisters, Dolly (Gertrude) and husband, Brian Kildee, Maryland, and Anita and husband, Jim Quinn, Boston. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Elaine Horn Kramer, Louise Horn Harris, Stephen, Andrew, Gregory, George 3rd Horn; Maureen, Margaret and Brian Kildee; Michael, Juliet, Jennifer Horn; and Christopher and Geoffrey Horn and many grand-nieces and nephews.
