M shabodeho@aol.com September 16, 2012, 10:15 am Published in Lebanon Daily News on September 7, 2012 PALMYRA James Marcus Keiter was born in Lebanon on October 19, 1922, to the marriage of Rev. Dr. A. Charles R. Keiter and Mabel E. Keiter. James received his formal education in the Lebanon City schools and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1939. Following high school, he attended Muhlenberg College, where he earned a B.S. degree in Biology, and, later, the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, from which he graduated in 1946 with an M.D. degree. Following graduation from medical school, James served his medical internship at Reading Hospital in Reading, where he met the love of his life and companion of 66 years, Lois Johns Keiter, to whom he was married on March 18, 1946. After his marriage and medical internship, he served in the military as a medical officer at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, until his discharge in 1949 with the rank of Captain. James spent the next 17 years practicing family medicine in Campbelltown. From August 1967 to 1987, when he retired, James worked as an emergency room physician in a group medical practice which pioneered emergency room services at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon. During this time, he served as medical coordinator of the EMT training program in Lebanon County and as a preceptor in the preceptorship program of the M.S. Hershey Medical Center College of Medicine. James was a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the American Medical Association, member and past president of the Lebanon County Medical Society, former member of the American College of Emergency Physicians and Physician Advisory Committee of the Emergency Health Services Federation of South-Central PA. He was a former member of the board of Lebanon County M.H. & M.R. James was a former member of the Palmyra Board of Education for 12 years. He belonged to Palm Lutheran Church of Palmyra and was a former member of the Board of Directors of Lutheran Social Services, East Region. James had a wide variety of interests, many of which he shared with his wife, Lois, including music, history, art, gardening, sports and travel. He was an accomplished watercolorist and clarinetist and an avid tennis player and skier. Since his retirement, James and his wife Lois have been active supporters of the arts and educational institutions. They served on the Meal-to-Wheels Program for five years and with the Pennsylvania Adopt-a-Highway program with the Palmyra Women's Club for 10 years. James M. Keiter died on Tuesday, September 4, 2012. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and his brothers, Charles W. Keiter, Kenneth W. Keiter and Edmund S. Keiter. He is survived by his loving wife, Lois, to whom he was completely devoted; children, Jeffrey A. Keiter, Barbara A. Keiter, Joan L. Keiter, and Carol A. Keiter; daughter-in-law, Mary E. Collins; son-in-law, Graeme Cowen; grandchildren, Thomas C. Keiter, Megan K. Keiter, Charles W. Low, Andrew J. Low, and Carolyn B. Low; two step grandchildren, Stacey E. Heiner and Christopher Michael Heiner; nephews, Thomas Keiter, James Keiter, David Keiter, John Keiter, Kenneth Johns and Thomas Johns; great-grandchild, Carter Low; and many other relatives and friends. A visitation will be held 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, September 10, 2012 at Buse Funeral Home, 145 North Grant St., Palmyra. Private service and interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, with military honors, will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to: Palm Lutheran Church, Palmyra, Pa., or Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pa., or Doctors Without Borders, Hagerstown, Md.
