Knarr MYERSTOWN Orville Bright Knarr, 89, formerly of South College St., was called to God's home on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at StoneRidge Towne Centre, Myerstown. He was the husband of the late Laura Corine (Kessler) Knarr, of Womelsdorf. Born in Schuylkill Haven, on December 22, 1922, he was the son of the late John A. and Viva N. (Bright) Knarr. He was preceded in death by sister, Joanna Knarr; and brother, Sterling A. Knarr (KIA during the battle of Aachen, Germany). He is survived by a son, Neil Orville Knarr and wife, Lucinda of Colonial Heights, Va.; granddaughter, Kristen M. Knarr Roberts and great-grandson, Nathanael M. Roberts of Richmond, Va. A 1940 graduate of Schuylkill Haven High School, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a soldier in the 82d Airborne Division (Glider element), 82d Battalion, Battery E (Anti Aircraft). He was in action in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Netherlands (Operation Market Garden), Normandy, France, the Battle of the Bulge, and Germany. An excellent athlete, he favored basketball and baseball. Prior to enlisting in the Army for WWII, he played on several traveling basketball teams in Schuylkill, Berks, and Lebanon Counties. He was an outstanding baseball player, playing in the 82d Airborne Division Championship, in Berlin, following the end of hostilities in WWII. After returning from Europe and an Army discharge, he settled in Myerstown with wife and son in 1948, and subsequently played on local baseball and softball teams for a number of years. He was a passionate Phillies fan, and followed the trials and tribulations of the Philadelphia Eagles. He was an avid fisherman who particularly enjoyed fishing for largemouth bass, traveling to Canada, Delaware, Virginia, Texas, and Florida in search of "the big one." He completed his working life as a building manager at the VA Hospital, Lebanon, for 23 1/2 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Myerstown UCC; life member of the Myerstown VFW Post 6076 and the Disabled American Veterans; charter member of the 82nd Airborne Division Assoc. and The Battle of Normandy Foundation; member of the American Legion and the Keystone Fire Co. & Goodwill Fire Co.'s of Myerstown. He was instrumental in establishing the Voice of Democracy program at ELCO for the VFW, and worked to initiate football at ELCO during the late 1960's/ early 1970's. Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from Grose Funeral Home, 358 W. Washington Ave., Myerstown, with a viewing at 10:30 am. Interment at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
