(Ketner) Krott, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at the Poplar Run Campus of the Stone Ridge Retirement Community in Myerstown. She was born on September 24, 1916, in Wernersville, the daughter of the late Jacob and Annie Ketner. She graduated from Wernersville High School in 1934, and from the Pennsylvania State University in 1938 with a degree in Education and began her teaching career in the Exeter School District soon thereafter. On December 25, 1941, she married Paul Grebe Krott, who passed away in 1998. From 1951 to 1981 she was a teacher in the Conrad Weiser School District, teaching health and physical education. In 1966, she became the Guidance Counselor at Conrad Weiser, and in 1971 got her Masters Degree in Counseling from Kutztown University. She was instrumental in starting the girl's athletic department at Conrad Weiser High School, which included field hockey, tennis, and basketball interscholastic teams. She retired from teaching in 1981, but remained very active in community affairs. Helen, in both her personal and professional lives, sought to advocate for and encourage the development of young people through education. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wernersville, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. She was a member of the Berks Area Counselors' Association, the Pennsylvania School Counselors' Association, the American Personnel and Guidance Association, the American Association of University Women, the Wernersville Women's Club, the Disaster Action Team of the American Red Cross, and the Heidelberg Heritage Society. She was a past board member of the Directors of the Wernersville Library. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Historical Society of Berks County Auxiliary. While at Penn State, she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority, and later, the Reading area Pan-Hellenic Association. She was the first Chairwoman of the Wernersville Borough Council, and was an active leader in the Girl Scouts of America. Helen was admired by many for her courage in the face of physical disability, her dedication to community service, and her devotion to family and friends. She is survived by two brothers, Richard Ketner and his wife, Doris of Wernersville, and Philip Ketner widower of Barbara, Joppa, Md.; six children, Gretchen E., wife of William C. Hicks of Springfield, Ohio; H. Christine, wife of Tom Collins of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; Frederick P. Krott and his wife Carol of Richland; M. Melissa, wife of H. Michael Huber of Cincinnati, Ohio; Elsa L., widow of John. T. Wertz of Robesonia; and Andrew D. Krott and his wife Susan of Cincinnati, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Lamm & Witman Funeral Home, Inc. in Wernersville. The funeral service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Lamm and Witman Funeral Home, with Rev. Lee A. Diefenderfer officiating. Interment will follow at Laureldale Cemetery.
