M. shabodeho@aol.com July 15, 2012, 3:53 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on June 24, 2012 EVANSVILLE, IN Ralph Robert Moody, Sr. passed away in Evansville, Ind., on June 18, 2012. Ralph was born January 7, 1923, in Lebanon, and was predeceased by his spouse, Mary Louise (Brown) Moody (2007); daughter, Cheryl Ann (Moody) Chappell (2010); parents, Wayne Leroy and Sallie Jane (Strack) Moody; brothers, Harold and Richard; sisters, Marian, Helen, and Rena; two infant children; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Ralph served in the 19th/20th Army Air Corps Band in Miami, Fla., and in the Philippines in September 1945-46. Ralph earned the Army/Air Force Sharpshooter Badge w/Rifle Bar, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, American Campaign and Victory WWII Medals, and his name is on the World War II Memorial registry. Ralph had various jobs, including truck driver, steelworker, and Licensed Practical Nurse at the Lebanon VA Hospital, but his first love, in addition to his wife, was music. Ralph was a well-regarded locally and self-taught trombonist who began playing in elementary school in the 1930's and continued until 2002 when he and Mary Louise moved to Newburgh, Ind. Ralph played with McKissick's Orchestra, the bands of Frank Taylor, Howard Gale, and Red McCarthy, and Perseverance, Tall Cedars, Lebanon Community Concert, and Jazz bands. Prior to their move to Indiana, Ralph and Mary Louise were "long time" members of St. Mark's U.C.C., Lebanon, where on select occasions they would perform trombone/piano duets, accompanied by Mary Louise's singing. Despite his busy schedule and large family, Ralph was always available to help family, friends, and neighbors, and enjoyed repairing anything and especially adapting furniture and chandeliers. He is survived by sons, Ralph, Jr. (Patricia) of Lebanon, Kevin (Barbara) of Camp Hill, Brian (Debbie) of Newburgh, Ind., Steffan (Toni) of Charlotte, N.C., Jeffrey (Nadine) of Wellington, Fla., and Scott (Andrea) of Palmyra; son- in-law, Curtis Chappell of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Dabich of Annville and Ruth Anne Zimmerman of Denver, Colo.; brother-in-law, James Blanton of Jacksonville, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 11 nieces; five nephews; eight great-nieces; three great-nephews; three great- great-nephews; and several cousins. The family will receive friends between 9 and 10 a.m. on Friday, June 29, at St. Mark's United Church of Christ, 426 N. 8th St., Lebanon, with a service at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Luciotti officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Harrisburg, Pa. or the American Lung Association, Camp Hill, Pa. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., is entrusted with arrangements.
