M. SHABODEHO@AOL.COM February 5, 2012, 10:50 am Published in Lebanon Daily News on February 1, 2012 Donald L. Roberts PALMYRA Donald L. Roberts, 84, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2012, at home. He was born on July 16, 1927, in Ebensburg, to the late Herbert and Ethel (Mutch) Roberts. Mr. Roberts received his secondary education in the public schools of Pennsylvania and Maryland. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and continued on a reserve status for eight years thereafter. His B.S. degree was earned at Millersville State and he went on to study physics at Franklin & Marshall College. Mr. Roberts taught in the public schools for two years after which he joined RCA. During his thirty-three years with RCA he served in various engineering, administrative, and management positions until his retirement in January, 1986. While with RCA he lived in Indiana as well as Pennsylvania, and traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. Mr. Roberts was active in many community organizations among which were, PTA, Scouting, NCCJ and United Way. He was at one time vice president of the Lancaster City School Board and a member of the Lancaster County Vocational Technical Advisory Board. Although Mr. Roberts' vocational interests were primarily scientific, his avocations have been centered around art, literature, and education. He wrote two books, Tremolo, a book of poetry, and Mumbly-Peg, a book of games between the great wars. Surviving are his wife Joan (Yeager) Roberts; three sons, Kevin Roberts of Lancaster, Keith Roberts of Lancaster, and Ralph Roberts of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters, Donna Sturgis and her husband, Bill of Mt. Gretna, and Patricia Helman and her husband Bill of Millersville, Phyllis Esbenshade of Ephrata; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 538 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, with Anne Mason, M.Div. officiating. The family would like everyone to know that the church is fully handicapped accessible. Arrangements are being handled by the Hetrick-Bitner Funeral Home.
