Joseph Shantz, proprietor of the City hotel, Lebanon, died very suddenly at his home on Sunday afternoon of an affection of the abdomen and inflammation of the bowels. Deceased was well known to a great many Lancastrians as he often visited this city. He was born in Lebanon and although a painter by trade had been in the hotel business for many years. In 1867 he was elected sheriff of Lebanon county by the Republicans. He always was a prominent politician and a leading member of the fire department. He leaves a wife, two sons and two daughters.
