Shaffer Clerk of Court ----------------------------- (Receipt from minister sent to Orphans' Court verifying marriage took place:) I, I H McLaine (?) hereby certify that on the 4th day of November one thousand nine hundred and two at Lewisburg PA Edward A. Meckley and Susan M Schell were by me united in marriage in accordance with license issued by the Clerk of Orphans' Court of Union County, Pennsylvania, number 2271. Name, (signed) I H McLaine (?) Title, Minister Residence, Lewisburg PA Additional Comments: Where any handwriting has been indecipherable, it is noted with (?) next to the best guess for the word. Family lore has it that Edward Meckley left Susan Schell unexpectedly after the birth of their daughter Fay. It has been phrased that he "took his guitar and left". Little is known of him at this writing (2006). Our family can only deduce that he was a handsome darker-skinned and darker-haired man with fine features, because Fay was quite a beauty in that way, and her mother was very fair, blonde and blue-eyed. Susan Schell is here listed as having no occupation. She was one of 13 children raised on a Union County farm and worked on that farm with her siblings who remained at home. Susan M. Schell is listed in these documents with her middle initial only. She was my great grandmother, and told me that her middle name was Mabel. Her father Jonas had a two-line rhyme for each child, and he would go around the supper table reciting for each child in turn. The rhyme for her was "Susan Mabel jumped over the table." Susan Mabel Schell Meckley was later remarried to William J. Dietrich and had another daughter whom she named June, who is alive at this 2006 writing. Susan initially worked for Dietrich in Allentown PA as domestic help, but helped raise his remaining children (of whom he had four- William J, Naomi, Ruth, and Esther) after marriage. After his death, she lived indepenently for some years on 12th Street in Allentown, and later at Episcopal House and Nightingale Home and Cedarbrook Home. Susan died 2 months short of age 91 in February 1974 and is buried in the Grandview Cemetery in Allentown, Lehigh County, PA. She rests with her second husband, his son William J Dietrich Jr, and his wife below the Dietrich headstone. On the other side is her son in law, Walter Decker, and a stone and plot reserved for June. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 6.1 Kb
