Me and Uncle Mike were working pretty busy and we could not find time to take the two children with us for we wanted to have their likenesses taken with ours. In the picture which I send you with this letter are four pictures, uncle Michaels, my own, brother Daniels and sister Mary Ann’s. We could not make arrangements very well to have sister Ellen with us but I will try and get her picture in the near future and send it to you. You will please excuse the pictures for the present as they are drawn on tintype. As soon as the weather is favourable I will send you my picture on card. I was very sorry to hear about my cousin John Murphy dying, but as it was the Lord’s will I sincerely hope it is all for the best and hope my uncle and aunt will not grieve too much about him but try and bear up through it all for it often happens that our dearest is taken away from us. I hope when you receive this letter you will all be enjoying good health. I cannot very well wish you had a merry Christmas and a happy new year because the death of cousin John Murphy stopped you from having them. We are all enjoying good health at present but my grandfather he is laid up about two months with a very bad foot but he is getting better now. I need not tell you William Sullivan went back to the old country for you will know it before you receive this. He did not get along as good as he liked to, so he took a notion to go back. Mary is in service close to where we live. I will now bring my letter to a close hoping to hear from you soon again. I hope grandmother is enjoying good health as she is getting quite old and old age never comes alone. You will please give my best wishes to Uncle James and all enquiring friends, and accept the same yourself, from your ever loving nephew, William J Harrington. P.S. Uncle Mike is going to send a picture to Aunt Mary Ann when he answers her letter. Wm. J. Harrington, Miners Mills Post Office, Luzerne Co., PA Additional Comments: William Harrington, son of Cornelius and Margaret Harrington. His parents died in 1879-1880, he was cared for by his uncle Michael Harrington. The original letter is still in the possession of my family.
