He and his brother-in-law Benjamin Carpenter, were two of the courageous men who were defeated under the force of Col. John Butler. It was after Peace that Owen turned to Methodism and became a preacher serving first in the areas between Kingston and Forty Fort. He and his wife were among the members of the first class organized there in spring 1788.) In 1821, the Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church were: Daniel Tallman, Jeremiah Tallman, Alexander Smith, John Forster, John Laverty, John Thomas, and Amos Scott. These trustees brought a lawsuit against Aaron Hagerman in September of the year in a dispute over the ownership of 10 acres of land in Loyalsock Twp which were in Aaron's possession. Into April 1822 variance in the matter was referred to Henry Hughes, William Wilson, Thomas Caldwell (sp?), Jacob Bastien, and Peter Vanderbilt, these men met at Mr Hughes' home to decide. Each was paid $1 per day for their service, the cost of which Aaron Hagerman eventually had to pay when the case was decided in favour of the Trustees. (Note: this Chapel was torn down in 1826 and the Calvary United Methodist Church was erected on the site) The conference have through proven that the decision of the conference appointed to try Henry Lenhart did not bring on a proper verdict and having heard the testimony of John Sayers concerning the testimony of William Cummings do agree; it is expedient that said Henry Lenhart shall make a public acknowledgement of the impropriety of his conduct and further he shall not exercise the office of Deacon in our church; no longer be considered as a preacher among us and that he remain on trial six months. The acknowledgement to be in the following words Ð 1) I confess that I have frequently taken the name of God in vain. 2) That I have indulged sinful tempers. 3) That I acted improperly in the case of Mr. Henderson. This to be done 2 weeks from tomorrow when the assistant comes to Lycoming Chapel and in that case he willfully evades making the above acknowledgement that the preacher who has charge of the circuit declare that he is not any longer a member of our church. M Pearse, Presiding Elder, Jeremiah Tallman, Elijah Reaves, Henry Kohn, Jebulon Baird. At the quarterly meeting held August 30, 1818 at Youngmanstown. The conference considered Henry Lenhart's case and altho' there is no doubt but that the decision of the conference which tried his case was just and that he was guilty of the claims laid to his charge yet the opinion that there appears facts spoken in the heat of passion have escaped his memory and that he could distinctly recollect them, we would with humility acknowledge the facts. Therefore the conference sincerely decending his salvation and observing in him remarks of contrition, do agree to receive him in society as a private member. At the quarterly meeting August 30, 1818, Henry Lenhart was restored to his post. NORTHUMBERLAND CIRCUIT Northumberland Circuit embracing the entire West Branch Valley was formed May 6, 1791 at the meeting of the Methodist Episcopal Conference held at Baltimore, Maryland. The geographic area involved was from Wilkes Barre on the North Branch to Northumberland thence up the West Branch to Lock Haven and up Bald Eagle to Unionville, thence to Penns Valley, thence by a path through Buffalo Valley to Northumberland. The circuit had 2 preachers and 250 members in 1791. In 1856 there were 43 preachers and 8,244 members. 1791-2 Northumberland Circuit, Baltimore District: Nelson Reed, Presiding Elder, with Richard Parriot [sic] (Parrott), Siens [sic] (Lewis?) Browning, James Campbell and William Colbert as circuit preachers. (Note: In 1793 William Colbert was called upon to add the work to the work of the Wyoming Circuit the work of the Northumberland Circuit. Thus May 1793 Mr Colbert preached in Lackawanna Forge at the home of James Sutton. While Mr Sutton wasn't a Methodist he was a man of very excellent spirit. Today, the Historical Society of Philadelphia Conference has possession of Mr Colbert's journal. Ref. History of the Wyoming Circuit) In 1799 Wyoming and Northumberland Circuits were united. Quarterly Meeting was held at John Egberts, Mahoney in April 1802. Quarterly Meeting was held at H __ illegible in Buffalo on 9 October 1802.
