PA DANIEL CLARK One of our very earliest lumbermen. He came from Painted Post about 1830, first to Sartwell, soon after removing to Port Allegany, where he began work in the A.S. Arnold saw mill. At this time there were only three houses between Main street and the river on Mill street. A.S. Arnold occupying the house on the site where the J. B. Dalton residence is now located. The mill was of the up-down-type. Soon after this Mr. Clark went up the Portage to work for Mr. Jacob Cass for $11.00 per month, sun to sun. Saving money he purchased two teams; one his eldest son William drove, at the age of seven years, and he the other, and they began trucking material from Olean, N.Y. Next he began work for A.M. Benton at Coleman Mills. Later owning this industry he bought and cleared immense tracts of white pine timber, rafting this down the river to Cinncinnati. The last raft brought the immense sum of $10,000. At this time he used the early type of a circular saw mill. This was the same site which C.E. Hubbard later rebuilt, using many of the perfectly sound old timbers in its erection, and cutting many million feet of the hardwood which had been left when the pine timber was marketed. Daniel Clark married Julia Ann Cummings and to them a large family of sturdy sons and daughters were born; William who married Mary Murphy; Chauncy, who married Nettie Delmage; James who married Minerva Hobar; Ella, who married John Grey; George, who married Ella Hobar; Daniel died young; Mary who married Lafayette Starkweather; Johnny who died young; Matilda who married Sam Howard; Eugene who married Ella Pressler; John, who married Sarah Joseph; Cora, who married Mott Delmage; Chester, who married Anna Goodall; and Fred, who married Adella Simpier.
