A glorious flood of light burst into the door of the room in which Mrs. Hannah Hamlin was sitting last Sunday evening, Feb. 18. It was the soft, ambient flame of eighty-nine wax candles, all blended into one and carried over his head by her son. Each candle represented a year in the life of this most beloved and useful woman and was a fit emblem of the same. A few friends had convened to press her hands and offer congratulations on that memorable evening – all rose instantly to their feet, and cheered as the pillar of light burst into the room. It was carried to a table near which she was sitting. The girdle of light encircled a towering birthday cake – white as the driven snow, and ornamented with hearts – broken and unbroken – just slightly intimating some of the mischief she had done in her innocent girlhood; for numerous were the victims strewn along her pathway before she made her final choice. And now may delight and peace be her constant attendants is the prayer of her loving friends. March 1, 1923. Page 1. Charles Calkins, living to observe his 68th birthday anniversary on Saturday, died at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. George Humphrey at Westons Sunday afternoon at 3:20 o’clock. He had been ill for three weeks, pneumonia being the cause of death. He had been a resident of this city for more than 30 years and at one time was storekeeper at the local Union Tank Line plant. He was born in Farmersville, February 24, 1855. He was a member of Olean Lodge No. 252 F.&A.M. and Olean Lodge, 471, I.O.O.F. Page 1. “Now, on your eighty-fifth birthday, does the way seem long as you look back upon your early girlhood?” asked one of the guests of Mrs. J.C. Hamlin, last Saturday, April 7th. “No” was the prompt reply, “Not from all points of view.” Though youth is gone the beautiful glow of the settling sun seems to illume the whole long pathway, making one harmonious picture of its lights and shades, Life’s picture. Mrs. Bosworth who lives with her mother, had an elegant table spread for her and her guests, at 4 o’clock in the afternoon to commemorate the day. April 19, 1923. Page 1. A most pleasant occasion on Wednesday, was the informal gathering of relatives and friends at the home of Miss Rena Balsley to celebrate the 84th birthday of her mother, Mrs. Julia Richmond. Mrs. Richmond was born in 1839 in the hotel that stood opposite the present Wright House. This establishment, well remembered by the older people of the vicinity was conducted by her father, Oshea Bennett, a pioneer hotel man of this town who afterward built and operated the Bennett House which stood on the corner of Main and Church streets. When a young girl she was united in marriage to E.F. Richmond, deceased of Smethport and she has spent her entire life here. Many friends unite in congratulating Mrs. Richmond and hope that she will be spared many more years of usefulness. Page 3. Rev. Miles Tupper claims to be the oldest man in Eldred Borough; he is also the oldest man living born in Eldred township, in fact he is older than the town itself, this being a part of Ceres township at the time of his birth. He was born April 15, 1835 and should he live until next Sunday he will be 88 years of age. April 26, 1923. Page 2. Crosby: A little daughter was born Saturday to Mr. and Mrs. George Lathrope. Brown was the recipient yesterday of congratulations on attaining his 87th birthday. A the first Baptist church just at the close of the morning service a most beautiful tribute was paid to the grand old man who has been a member since 1879, with the exception of 17 years absence on public duties in Washington D.C. Mr. Brown is son or deacon of this church. The project was kept carefully secret from him and came as a great surprise. At the proper time he was escorted to the front and listened to an address by Deacon W.H. Dennis, by Hon. Rufus Barrett Stone, a fellow member of the bar and a life-long friend. Mrs. A.P. McConnell, in behalf of the Howard club, presented a birthday cake. But the prettiest ceremony of all when the little tots, from the primary department of the Sunday school passed in front of the guest of honor, each with a rose, 87 of them, which they present him till his hands and arms were overflowing. Following them came the whole congregation and the Sunday school and loaded him with birthday cards. As may be imagined, the grand old man was overwhelmed with the spontaneous evidence of the love and esteem in which he is held by his fellow townsmen. His response was brief but full of feeling and as always from him was right to the point. The address of Mr. Dennis was carefully copied in beautiful penmanship by a high school pupil and presented to Mr. Brown. – Bradford Star-Record, Monday. May 3, 1923. Page 8.
