The home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Henry Gleason was the occasion of a very pretty wedding on Thursday, December the twenty eight, 1916, when their daughter, Mildred J. became the bride of Mr. Leonard E. Alton, of Wilmington, N.C. The house was very attractively decorated with southern smilax and holly. Promptly at noon, Mrs. Howard F. Brownell took her place at the piano, and to the strains of Lohengrin’s Wedding March, the bridal party entered the parlor, where the ceremony was performed by the Rev. J.S. Fleming, of the Methodist Episcopal church, before a beautiful arch of holly and southern smilax with pillars of southern pine. The bride was preceded by the maid of honor, Miss Marjory Gleason, and was given in marriage by her father, Mr. Charles Henry Gleason. The groom was attended by Mr. Elbie C. Ray, of Indiana, Pa. Following congratulations a delicious buffet lunch was served by the Misses Helen Gleason and Helen Bouton. The bride was attractively gowned in white crepe meteor, trimmed with silver lace. She wore a net veil and carried white bride’s roses. The maid of honor wore taupe crepe meteor and carried a bouquet of holly and smilax. Mr. and Mrs. Allen left on the 2:15 B.R.&P. train for a brief visit to Buffalo, and on Tuesday evening started for Wilmington, where they will be at home at Caroline Place after February the first. The bride is a charming and accomplished young woman, a graduate of the Smethport High School and of Temple Institute at Philadelphia, and has taught domestic science in Wilmington, N.C., and Hickory, Pa. She has a large circle of friends in Smethport, whose best wishes go with her to her new home. The groom is a young man who has made a very favorable impression during his visits here. He holds a responsible position with the Chadbourne Lumber Co. in Wilmington. The bride was the recipient of many beautiful gifts including silver, linen, cut glass, china and furniture. Hogarth – Doyle Married in New Orleans, on Tuesday, January 30, Miss Leona Hogarth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.K. Hogarth, of this borough to Mr. Lennard Doyle, of New York. News of the wedding was a surprise to all but the immediate families, the engagement of the young couple having been announced at the time of the visit of Mrs. L.K. Hogarth to her daughter in Grand Rapids, Mich., last month. The bride is a young actress of promising ability who has been creating a furore among critics by her marvelous portrayal of “Frailty” on tour with Geo. V. Hobert’s great play, “Experience.: She is a young lady whose rapid rise in her chosen profession has been a source of much gratification to her wide circle of friends in Smethport, where her entire life has been spent up to the time she entered upon a theatrical career a year ago last fall. She is a graduate of the Smethport High School and attended a conservatory of music in Chicago, and is a beautiful young lady who is not only a talented actress, but a musician of rare attainments. Mr. Doyle, though young in years, has played with David Warfield and other actors of note, and is the leading man in the theatrical company which is presenting “Experience: in the southern cities. Mr. and Mrs. Doyle will spend a few weeks in Smethport during July and August. The Democrat unites with hosts of friends of the bride in extending best wishes to the young couple for their future happiness and prosperity. Page 1. Daly – Breneman At St. Elizabeth’s parochial residence at 8 o’clock P.M., Tuesday evening, at eight o’clock Tuesday evening, Rev. P.J. Donohue pronounced the words that united in marriage Alice Cecilia Daly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Daly, and Walter A. Breneman, son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Breneman. (Unreadable Section) She is a graduate of the Smethport High School and is a graduate nurse, having followed that profession in Erie and Smethport. She is deservedly popular with a wide circle of friends in Smethport where she was born and where her entire life has been spent. Mr. Breneman is one of Smethport’s leading young business men who numbers his friends by the legion. He is a young man of real sterling qualities. Mr. and Mrs. Breneman have leased apartments in the Clark block on Main street and are now at home to their many friends. The Democrat in common with the entire community unites in extending to this happy young couple best wishes for a long and happy married life. Page 1. Bates – Lamont Thursday night, January 25, at 8 o’clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Neely, occurred the wedding of Marion R. Bates, of Smethport, and Marcus La Mont, of Olean, Rev. W.E. VanDyke officiating. The bride and groom were attended by Miss Florence Bates and Mr. Harold Anderson. They took their place under an arch of evergreen and roses, while the wedding march was being played by Miss Lois Burdick. The bride was given away by her father, Charles Bates. She was dressed in white and carried a bouquet of carnations. Directly following the ceremony a wedding supper was served. Covers were laid for thirty and the decorations were carnations and roses. Among the out-of-town guests wee Mrs. Claude Slade, a sister of the groom, Mrs. Arch Anderson and son, Harold, Miss Elizabeth Miller, of Olean; Mrs. Jane Anderson and son, Lewis, of Kasson, Pa. The young couple will make their future home in Olean, N.Y. Page 1. Reed – Benson At St. Luke’s rectory, this borough, Friday evening, January 26, Rev. W.E. VanDyke pronounced the words which united in marriage Miss Ethel Reed and Mr. George Benson, well known young people of Olean. The bride of this happy alliance is a charming and popular young lady, who is deservedly popular in her home city. She is a graduate of the Olean High School and of Westbrook business college and during the past eight years has held a responsible position with the Border Real Estate agency. Mr. Benson is freight agent for the W.N.Y&P> traction company in Olean and is held in high esteem by all who know him. Mr. and Mrs. Benson will reside in Olean, where a handsome home is furnished ready for their occupancy on North Union street, that city. Britton - Ness Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Marion Britton and Harry Ness, popular young people of Smethport, which event was celebrated in Buffalo Tuesday. The plans of the young people had been well guarded and the announcement of the wedding came as a complete and happy surprise to their many friends. The bride, who is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. Britton of the Clarinett dairy farm, this borough, is one of Smethport’s most popular and charming young ladies. For some time past she has held a position with the Redfield Publishing co. Mr. Ness, who is head mechanic at the Quirk garage, is a splendid young man in every sense of the word. After the wedding trip they will return to Smethport where they will reside in future. Smith – Willey Mr. and Mrs. Wilson smith, of Rouseville, have announced the marriage of their daughter, Miss Nancy Mabel Smith, to Mr. Charles Lysander Willey, of Independence, Kan., which event was solemnized at Christ Episcopal church, Oil City, Pa., Thursday, March 8, 1917. Mr. Willey, who formerly was a well known and highly respected Smethport resident for a number of years past has been located in the Southwest, where he is a highly successful oil operator in the Kansas and Oklahoma oil fields. Mr. and Mrs. Willey will be at home after May 15th, at the Booth hotel, Independence, Kansas. March 22, 1917. Page 8. Engagement of G.H. Rue Is Formally Announced At a meeting of the young women’s club of Plantsville, Conn., Monday evening, April 16, an announcement was made of the engagement of Miss Dorothy Wilson, of that place, to Gilbert H. Rue, business manager of the Brownsville Telegraph, Brownsville, Pa. Mr. Rue is the youngest son of Mrs. Sarah J. Rue, Waynesboro, Pa. Miss Wilson is the talented daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Wilson. She is a pianist of much ability, having taken up piano at the Syracuse university and at the Sternburg school of music, Philadelphia. The date for the wedding is not announced. Mr. Rue was formerly linotype operator on the Miner and made many friends in this place, who extend congratulations. May 3, 1917. Page 1. Baldwin – Rudd Last Thursday afternoon at the parsonage of the M.E. church, Olean, the pastor, Rev. Williamson, pronounced the words that united in marriage Miss Harriet Baldwin, of Smethport, and Mr. Elmer Rudd, of North Tonawanda, N.Y. The bride was attended by Miss Margaret Sartwell, of Smethport, while Mr. M.E. Moyer, of Scranton, Pa., officiated as best man. The bride of this happy alliance has been a resident of Smethport for several years past, being a member of the household of her sister. Mrs. John Klein. During her sojourn here she has been a valued employe of the Scott Redfield Publishing Co., and is deservedly popular with a wide circle of acquaintances. Mr. Rudd, who holds the position of assistant foreman of the North Tonawanda Paper and Pulp co., has been a frequent Smethport visitor and is well and favorably known here. He is a fine young man in every sense of the word. Mr. and Mrs. Rudd left Monday for North Tonawanda where they will make their future home. May 10, 1917. Page 5. Cook – Newton The marriage of Miss Helen Newton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Newton to Johnnie Cook took place Saturday evening, May 5, at the St. Mary’s Parish, New Castle, Pa., Rev. Father O’Shea performing the ceremony. The attendants were Miss Florence Rice and Walter Hanon. Their many friends here extend to the young couple congratulations and best wishes. – Port Allegany Reporter. Mrs. Cook was a former resident of this borough, where she has a host of friends. Mr. and Mrs. John Haley, of Degolia, entertained with a reception at their home Monday evening in compliment to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Reyeler, of Degolia, who were married Sunday last, and who will reside in Degolia. Seventy-five friends were present and the occasion was greatly enjoyed. The newly married couple were the recipients of numerous gifts including pieces of cut glass and silver. The interior of the home was decorated with pink and white roses. A fine luncheon was served. Rosen – Berman One of the most beautiful and impressive ceremonies ever held in Smethport was witnessed by a large number of people at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Meyer Zafron at 139 East Main street, when Miss Jennie Rosen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rosen, became the bride of Mr. H. Berman, formerly of Boston, Mass. An abundance of lowers was used in decorating the interior of the residence for this happy occasion. The ceremony took place promptly at 8 o’clock. The procession was led by the bride and groom, followed by Mr. and Mrs. M. Zafron and Mr. and Mrs. Y. Simpkins. They entered the parlor where they were united in marriage by Rabbi A.Z. S___ of Olean N.Y. The bride was attired in a beautiful pink gown, trimmed with gold lace. Her veil was caught up with a wreath of lilies of the valley and she carried a bouquet of roses and carnations. Never before did she look more beautiful. The bride’s attendants were her sister, Mrs. M. Zafron, who was gowned in a yellow dutchess messalin, trimmed with Georgette crepe. Miss Alene Engstrom, who was attired in a pink crepe de chine and net dress, and Miss Astrid Johnson, who was beautifully attired in a blue messalin dress. The flower girls were Linda Johnson and Fannie Zafron. Mr. Meyer Zafron acted as best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at the residence, where about 40 guests were entertained. The dining room was beautifully decorated with ferns and white and pink carnations. Mrs. John Lindholm served the elegant lunch assisted by the waitresses, Alene McCarthy, Ella Johnson and Hattie Schooler. The wedding cake was one of rare beauty and excellence. Mr. and Mrs. Berman will make their home in Smethport where they have furnished rooms on Main street for their occupancy. The bride is a most charming and accomplished young lady. By her sweet and loving disposition she has won many friends. The groom is one of Smethport’s best young men and holds a responsible position as painter for the Engstrom Bros. Gallup – Dodge The marriage of Miss Bessie Dodge to Mr. Delbert L. Gallup, both of Betula, was solemnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Haven, Sunday, July 15, in the presence of the two families (unreadable) The bride is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Dodge and a graduate of the Smethport high school, class of 1914 and the bridegroom is an engineer at the Keystone plant. The Rev. Mr. Fleming officiated. Miss Herriman played the wedding march and Mary Lucille Haven acted as ring bearer. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Lena Dodge, and the bride’s brother, Elmer Dodge, acted as best man. Immediately after the ceremony a delightful luncheon was served. Mr. and Mrs. Gallup left Monday for Niagara Falls and other points of interest. They will be at home in Betula after August 1. Page 5. Kane Republican: A marriage license issued at Warren yesterday to Miss Gladys Arnold of this city, and First Lieutenant Arthur Nelson, of Company E. Sixteenth Pennsylvania infantry, indicates the culmination of a romance in Miss Arnold becoming the “war bride” of the popular officer of the Kane guard unit. Inquiry this morning disclosed the fact that friends of the popular couple were not in the secret, and announcement will come as a surprise to most intimate associates. Fleming united in marriage Minnie M. Cleveland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Cleveland, of Pierce Brook, and Lowell O. Waite, of Beaver Falls. The bride was attended by Miss Jennie Milroy and the groom was attended by Neil Holder. The happy couple left immediately in a car for Mt. Jewett and there boarded the noon train for Beaver Falls. The bride of this alliance is one of Smethport’s most charming young ladies, and is very popular with the younger social set. She is a graduate of the Smethport high school class of 1916. Mrs. Lilian McINtyre pastor of the U.B. church at Lancaster, Ohio who used the ring service. Seventy-five immediate relatives and friends were present. The interior of the home was effectively and artistically decorated throughout with lavender and pink asters and other flowers. As Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” was played by Mrs. Ann Rasner, pianist, of Bangor, Pa., and Paul McIntyre, violinist, of Lancaster, Ohio, a nephew of the bride, the bridal party took their places. First came the maid of honor, Miss Hazel Williams, the bride, escorted by her father, who gave her in marriage. They were met by the bridegroom, his best man J. Lawrence Morrison, of Smethport. While the marriage rites were being said the musicians rendered sweet music. Previous to the ceremony Miss Marian Wilbur of Fredonia, N.Y., sang, “Oh! Promise Me,” and “Because.” The bride was handsomely gowned in a robe of crepe de chine and Georgette crepe. She wore a tulle veil and carried a shower bouquet of white roses. The bridegroom’s gift to his bride was a very handsome brooch of platinum set with diamonds. Mr. Emery is a well known figure in the Pennsylvania oil region having large interest in all branches of the oil industry, including the producing, refining and transporting of oil. He is also largely identified with the chemical industry, being the only manufacturer of oxalic acid in the United States. His life long advocacy of the right of the people against corporate monopolies and trusts and his determined opposition to machine rule has stamped him as a recognized leader of political reform and gained for him national fame. In his early political history he was one of the prime movers in crating anti-discrimination sentiment that was later crystallized in the act creating the Interstate Commerce Commission. Mr. Emery has also always advocated civil service and was a member of the civil service league since its inception, actively supporting every movement for the uplift of humanity, the advancement of religion and the betterment of social conditions. Mr. and Mrs. Emery left for New York to remain for a few days before sailing for Peru, South America, where Mr. Emery has extensive mining an drubber interests. Later they will proceed to Montego Bay, Jamaica, B.W.I., to remain until spring at the emery winter home.
