A happy and brilliant wedding occurred at noon, Wednesday, June 21, 1905, when Miss Martha Brennan, youngest daughter of Mrs. J.W. Brennan of Mechanic street, was united in marriage to Mr. William Penn Clothier, Jr., of Buffalo, N.Y. The bride is one of Smethport’s fairest and highly cultured young ladies, who has been prominent in church, literary and social work to such a generous and successful extent as to make her services in almost constant demand. Of charming personality, the possessor of so unusually sweet disposition, she is especially commended by her friends on her accommodating and self-sacrificing nature. Among her many accomplishments her musical talent perhaps predominates and her vocal selections have many times been features of entertainment given for public benefit or for sweet charity’s sake. The groom is an exemplary young man who has become well known to many Smethport people as the result of many visits to the town. He holds a responsible position as head bookkeeper in a department of the general Railroad Signal Co. of Buffalo, N.Y. The marriage was performed in the pleasant parlor of the Brennan home which was beautifully decorated for the occasion with ferns, cut flowers and laurels. The bridal party, which was led by four little flower girls, Ruby and Marion Warren, Catherine Blowers and Caroline Brennan, entered the room to the strains of Mendelsohn’s Wedding March, played by Miss Verna Hafner. Mrs. M.J. Gallup of Mt. Jewett, Matron of Honor, who wore a hansome gown of pale blue silk followed the flower bearers. Mr. George Brennan, a brother, by whom the bride was given away came next, followed by the bride, beautifully gowned in a creation of crème crepe de chene and carrying a bouquet of bride roses. (the Article and description of the wedding procedure and guests continues at length) Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Clothier, Jr., departed on an afternoon train for New York city and will visit other points on their nuptial journey. They will make their home in buffalo, N.Y. Mrs. Clothier wore a traveling suit of blue Panama cloth. Page 3. Amos J. Williams and Mrs. Anna Long of Milltown, Wyoming county, N.Y., were married Friday afternoon last by Justice B.L. Mr. and Mrs. Bayer have the best wishes of many Smethport friends. Jul 6, 1905: Mrs. Frances Abbey, a well known lady, formerly of Smethport, was married May 27, 1905, to Mr. G.W. Earl, at the Parsonage of the White Temple, Portland, Oregon. The MINER extends belated, but nevertheless sincere, best wishes and congratulations. Mr. George Griffin of Newerf and Miss Helen Hulda Berg of Buffalo were married Wednesday of last week. James Ackerman of Sidney and Miss Gerda Okerlund of East Smethport were married at Olean Wednesday afternoon, June 28, by Rev. Ethan Curtis. Aug 10, 1905: Page 1. Ancient History. Mr. Charles H. Moore and Miss Mary Ann Goodwin were united in marriage at the house of the bride’s father Thomas Goodwin Esq., in Farmers Valley, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 1878, Rev. S.D. Morris officiating. Several of the personal friends of the bride and groom were present to witness the ceremony and extend congratulations and good wishes. Of Charley we have to say that he made a decidedly good win and on the other hand. Mary Ann may well be happy in the thought that she is the fortunate possesser of a good husband and Moore. It is our wish that their brightest anticipations will be realized and their joy be as sweet as the bouquet sent the printers. Page 1. Ancient History. Doolittle-Dennis – At the residence of G.T. We were surprised yet pleased to learn of the marriage of Mr. Edward McSweeney to Miss Alice Wilson, both of this place, at Bradford on Monday, Sept. 6, 1880. The ceremony was performed by Rev. The bride is a daughter of Mr. Clark Wilson, one of the editors of the Smethport Democrat, and is a lady highly esteemed and respected by her numerous acquaintances and friends in this community. And the same may be said of Mr. McSweeney. His genial, gentlemanly deportment while among us has won many strong and true friends. We wish the happy pair unalloyed joy for all time to come. Page 3.
