Foote and Miss Cora A. Kennicott, both of Buffalo. Feb 4, 1909: Mr. Lewis B. Scott and May Davis, both of Rochester, N.Y., were united in marriage by Justice A.W. Colegrove at his office late Monday evening, Feb. 1, 1909. Feb 25, 1909: Married, by the Rev. W.A. Harris on Monday evening, Feb. 22, 1909, at the Methodist Episcopal parsonage in this borough, Mr. Joseph Dellroy Winner and Miss Sarah Dellmatta Yoder, both of Williamsport. Mar 25, 1909: Ralph Leon Roland and Miss Hazel Margaret Briggs, both popular young people of Erie, were married recently at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira E. Briggs. Mr. Briggs was formerly court stenographer for this county and has many friends here. Apr 1, 1909: Page 5. The marriage of Miss Mabel Nelson of Mt. Jewett and Mr. A.C. Spreter of Bradford, which took place on January 20, has just been announced. Apr 22, 1909: Carlson-Johnson. Axel Edward Carlson of Smethport and Miss Elizabeth Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Johnson of Lantz were united in marriage at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 14th, 1909, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Gust E. Anderson of Mt. Jewett, Mrs. Anderson being a sister of the bride, Rev. Helmet pastor of the Swedish Mission church of Smethport, officiating. Among those present from out of town were; Mrs. J.F. Johnson of Lantz, mother of the bride; Mrs. John Carlson of Smethport, mother of the groom; John Carlson, brother of the groom with his wife and two children; Miss Ida Swanson, Miss Jennie Johnson and Miss Ada Spoonberg, all of Smethport, and Miss Mabel Johnson of Bradford, sister of the bride. Immediately after the ceremony the company was invited to partake of a substantial wedding dinner at the conclusion of which the bride and groom left for Jamestown and other points in that locality, where they will spend a week or ten days, after which they will establish their home at Smethport where the groom will engage at his occupation of stone mason. – Mt. Jewett Herald. Apr 29, 1909: Page 5. Miss Clara R. Snyder of Coleville and Mr. George B. Irvine of Duke Center were united in marriage at the parsonage of St. Elizabeth’s church yesterday (April 28, 1909) by Rev. J.F. Dugan. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Emma Snyder and the groomsman was Mr. Fred Snyder. The happy young couple left in the afternoon for New York and other points for a honeymoon trip of three weeks. Both are popular young people and have the best wishes of many friends. May 6, 1909: Mr. Benjamin H. Lasher and Miss Mary Ida Gibbs both of Derrick City were united in marriage by Justice A.W. Colegrove at his office on Wednesday, May 5, 1909. May 13, 1909: Mr. Frank Murphy of New Castle, Pa., and Miss Mary Hillard of Hazelhurst, were united in marriage at St. Edmond’s Catholic church, Hazelhurst, at 6:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 5th, Rev. P.J. Blake, pastor of St. Edmond’s officiating. – Mt. Jewett Herald. Jun 3, 1909: Mr. Walter Sherwood and Miss Lillian Holmes both of Port Allegheny were united in marriage at the M.E. parsonage of this place by Rev. W.A Harrison Wednesday evening, May 26, 1909. The happy couple have many friends in that section who wish them a long life of wedded bliss. Page 5. Robert E. Taylor and Miss Bertha O. Warning were united in marriage last Saturday evening May 29, 1909, at eight o’clock at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McKean, in the presence of a few of the immediate friends of the high contracting parties, Rev. W.A. Harris, pastor of the M.E. church, performed the ceremony. After the words were spoken that made these young people one Mrs. McKean had a delicate luncheon served for them and the assembled guests. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor will reside in Smethport. The bride and groom are both popular young people who have many friends in Smethport who will unite with the MINER in wishing them a long and happy married life. The bride formerly lived in Grand Rapids, Wis., and the groom is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Taylor. Jun 17, 1909: The home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lyman on Water street, this borough, was the scene of a very pretty quiet wedding yesterday (June 16, 1909) at high noon, when Miss Donna Bell, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman, was united in marriage to Mr. Roy E. Martindale of Olean. The wedding ceremony was performed in the parlor in the presence of the immediate family and a very of the most intimate friends of the bride. Rev. J.H. Graybeill pastor of the Presbyterian church at St. Marys performed the ceremony using the beautiful ring service of that church. The bride was attired in a neat traveling gown and the groom the regulation business suit. Immediately following the congratulations of their friends present a dainty luncheon was served to the bridal couple and the guests. Mr. and Mrs. Martindale left on the afternoon Shawmut train, amid showers of rice and friendly greetings, for a short honeymoon trip which will include Buffalo and other cities after which they expect to make their home near Keating Summit. The out of town guests were Mrs. Henry Martindale, mother of the groom, of Olean, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Hanley of Shinglehouse and Misses Rena and Frances Allen of Port Allegany. Mr. Martindale is employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. as telegraph operator at Relay, a station near Keating Summit, and is spoken of as a young man of excellent character and habits. The bride has been employed in the Bell Telephone office for some time and has always resided in Smethport where she has a host of friends who wish them a long and happy married life. Page 5. Mr. Alfred L. Provin of East Smethport and Mrs. Eileen J. Churchley of Buffalo, N.Y., were married recently at St. Paul’s Episcopal church, Buffalo, by the Rev Louis H. Buisch. Mr. and Mrs. Provin will reside in East Smethport. Their many friends in this vicinity wish them a long life of happiness. Page 5. Mr. and Mrs. Harley T. Sawyer announce the engagement of their daughter, Lorraine, to Mr. Rex Lewis Stark of this place. The wedding to take place early in July. Jun 24, 1909: Page 3. On Wednesday of last week Mr. Fred S. June of Annin Creek and Miss Leona B. Sawyer of Port Allegany and Mr. Clinton C. Cooper of Annin Creek and Miss Carrie B. Jane of Port Allegany were married at Portville, N.Y. It was a double wedding. Page 5. Mr. Hugh Dysart Cutler of Brandon, Manitobia, and Miss Janet Rose of Port Allegany were married at the home of the latter on Saturday, June 12. The bride has many friends in Smethport who wish her a long life of happiness. July 8, 1909: Page 5. On Saturday evening, June 26, at 8 o’clock Miss Ida McConeghy, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McConeghy of Coudersport, and Mr. Perry Nixon of Port Allegany, formerly of Smethport, were united in marriage at Coudersport, Rev. Harold S. Stewart performing the ceremony at the rectory. The brides a popular Coudersport young lady and the groom is well known here where he has many friends who wish them a long life of wedded bliss. Page 5. Mrs. William Demler of Boylston street entertained on Wednesday afternoon covers being laid for ten. The table decorations were smilax, carnations and sweet peas. The place cards announced the engagement of Miss Inez Boring, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Boring of Summer street, to Mr. Paul Green of Smethport. The out of town guests were; Mrs. L.D. Cogswell of Halsey, Mrs. Elmer Sterling of North Tonawanda, N.Y., and Mrs. E.. Slingerland of Gillmore. – Bradford Sunday Herald. Page 5. Miss Lourene Shurtz and Mr. Charles A. Towers of Buffalo were married on Wednesday of last week at the home of the bride’s parents in Port Allegany. Page 5. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hafner, residing near Clermont celebrated their 50th anniversary on Saturday, July 3rd. Only the immediate family was present. Jul 15, 1909: Biesem-Swisher On Wednesday of last week in this borough occurred the marriage of Mr. Philip A. Biesen of Empire, Canal Zone, Panama, and Miss Edna daughter of R.M. Swisher former editor of the Mt. Jewett News of Mt. Jewett, Rev. W.A. Harris, pastor of the M.E. church of this borough, officiating. The marriage ceremony took place in the M.E. parsonage. The groom holds a fine position in the canal zone, being connected with an air compressor plant engaged on the excavating work on that mighty undertaking and is said to be a model young man in every sense of the word. Miss Swisher is a charming and accomplished young lady who is justly popular in Mt. Jewett, where her friends are numbered by the legion. She has hitherto held a position in the Mt. Jewett post office, where her father is post master and by her courteous and obliging conduct of that position has won the regard al all who have come in contract with her. Mr. and Mrs. Biesen will leave in August for Panama where Mr. Biesen will resume his position, and will make their home there for some time. The MINER will unite with the hosts of friends of this estimable couple in wishing them an abundance of happiness and prosperity on this auspicious occasion. Jul 22, 1909: Haley-Sharpe. On Monday of last week, at Bradford, occurred the marriage of Mr. Harry E. Haley, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Haley of DeGolia, formerly of Smethport, and Miss Ida Sharpe, of Clearfield, Pa. The groom, who is a well known barber, had been a life-long resident of Smethport up to several months ago, and is justly popular here. For sometime past he has been located in Bradford. He has followed his vocation in several surrounding towns and is well known and has made hosts of friends wherever he has been located. Mr. Haley is a fine young man. The announcement of his marriage comes as a pleasant surprise to his many friends. The bride is said to be a charming young lady in every sense of the word, and is one of the popular young ladies of her home town. Mr. and Mrs. Haley intend to make Bradford their future home. The MINER unites with a host of friends in extending congratulations to this happy young couple. The home of William Andrews on Mechanic street, this borough, was the scene of a pretty wedding at 7 o’clock Tuesday evening, July 20, 1909, when Miss Ethel, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Andrews was united in marriage to Mr. Charles V. Scull of this place. (Wedding description continues at length, portions excerpted here) The new automobile of Sanford L. Fry was awaiting and Mr. Fry took them to Port Allegany where they took the flyer for Philadelphia and Atlantic City, where they will take a short honeymoon, after which they will return to Smethport and reside in one part of E.W. Workley’s double house on King street. The bride is a charming and popular member of Smethport’s younger social circle, a member of St. Luke’s church and choir, and has been employed in the store of Fry & Comes for two years past. The groom ahs been a resident of Smethport for the past ten years and has a host of friends here. He is a glass gatherer by trade and followed that vocation here for some time. Later he was a partner in the grocery firm of Andrews & Scull and has lately been employed in the dry goods store of Fry & Comes. Page 5. The engagement of Miss Esther Erhart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Erhart and Albert Sidney Burdick, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Burdick, of the borough is announced. The bride to be is a talented young music teacher who has made this place her home for several years past, and Mr. Burdick is no accomplished musician, who is connected with music and insurance business of his father in this place. The marriage of this popular young couple will occur the forepart of next month. Jul 29, 1909: At the home of C.H. Gleason, Mr. Edwin S. Churchill and Miss Orra Williams were united in marriage by the Rev. W.E. VanDyke at 8 o’clock Thursday morning, July 29. Aug 5, 1909: Burdick-Erhart Nuptials. Mr. Albert Sidney Burdick and Miss Esther Erva Erhart two of Smethport’s popular and talented young musicians were united in marriage by Rev. W.E. Van Dyke at St. Luke’s church at 9 o’clock this morning Thursday, August 5, 1909. The wedding was a very quiet affair only the parents of the bride and groom and the attendants of the happy couple being present. The bride was attended by Miss Beulah Holder and Mr. J. Lawrence Morrison acted as best man. Immediately after the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Burdick drove to Port Allegany in C.D. Comes automobile where they take the flyer for Harrisburg, Washington and Baltimore for a short honeymoon trip, after which they will reside in Smethport. So securely had they kept the secret of the time and place of their wedding that they would have got away without the usual shower of rice had not their friends of the MINER force caught on and filled the gap. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Burdick and the bride is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Erhart of Colegrove. Both are popular and highly accomplished young musicians and they have many friends in Smethport and vicinity who hope that their married life will be one of pure, unalloyed happiness. Aug 19, 1909: Invitations have been issued for the marriage of Mr. Theron Lyle to Miss Elizabeth Ellingsfeld which event will occur the 24th of this month. The groom is a member of the grocery firm of Andorfer & Lyle and is one of Smethport’s most progressive young business men. Miss Ellingsfeld is a daughter of Mr. Elizabeth Ellingsfeld of this borough had is one of the town’s most popular young ladies. Sep 9, 1909: On Tuesday evening at St. Luke’s were united in marriage Mr. Lewis H. Marks of Bridgeton, N.J., and Miss Ethel, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warley Gifford of this borough. Mrs. W.E. VanDyke of Pittsburg presided at the organ. White the guests were being seated she played many suitable selections in a most pleasing manner. At 7:30 the strains of Lohengrin’s wedding march pealed forth as the bride came up the Isle leaning on her father’s arm. She was attended by Mrs. A.W. Mitchell of Erie. At the chance she was met by Mr. Marks with Mr. C.C. Choate as best man. (Description continues at length but is difficult to read) Mrs. marks is a deservedly popular young women who has always been active in the many branches of church work, has for several years taught most successfully in the primary grades of our public schools and who is always in demand socially. The many friends of this charming young people unite in wishing them long life and a full measure of happiness together. After a short wedding journey they will make their future home in Smethport. (A list of attendees is at the end) At the home of the bride’s parents at Larabee at 12 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 1909, occurred the marriage of Mr. George N. Barrett, Jr., and Miss Cecil K., only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Crandall, Rev. H.A. Reed of the Port Allegany M.E. church officiating. There were about 125 guests present at the ceremony. The bride was attired in blue silk and the groom wore a business suit. Mr. Rex Stark of this place acted as best man while Mrs. Rex Stark acted as matron of honor. After the ceremony a fine dinner was served and at 2:12 Mr. and Mrs. Barrett left for Hammondsport, Bath and other points on their honeymoon, after which they will make their home at Larabee for the present. The principals of this pretty wedding have long resided in this section. The groom is employed at the P.R.R. station at Larabee and is a steady, industrious young man who has hosts of friends in this vicinity and the bride is a both popular and charming young lady. The MINER will unite with many well wishers in tendering congratulations on this happy occasion. Page 3. Mr. Conrad J. Hines of Berkshire, Mass., and Miss Gertrude Long were united in marriage at the home of her parents, in the parlors of the Commercial hotel, Mt. Jewett on Wednesday Sept. 1, 1909, by the Rev. G.A. Sutton of Kane. The bride’s many friends in Smethport wish the happy couple a long and happy life of wedded bliss. Sep 30, 1909: Page 5. Mr. Dilbert L. Carey and Miss Winnie McCord were united in marriage by Rev. W.A. Harris on Thursday evening, September 23, 1909, at the home of H.M. Jones in East Smethport. The happy couple have the best wishes of a host of friends. Page 5. At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Thomas of East Smethport, Monday at noon, a very pretty wedding took place when their daughter, Myrtle, was united in marriage to Elmer E. Hopper of Port Allegany. The Rev. McGarvey of the Methodist church officiating, only immediate relatives being present. The attendants to bride and groom were sister of the bride, Miss Edna Thomas, and brother Almond E. Thomas. Directly following the ceremony a dainty lunch was served, after which Mr. and Mrs. Hopper left for Erie, Cambridge Springs and other points of interest. Oct 7,1909: Page 3. On Saturday, Oct 2, 1909, at one of the county public buildings in this borough Mr. Arthur A. Adams and Miss Iva May Cook were united in marriage by Justice A.W. Colegrove. Oct 21, 1909: Page 5. Mr. Peter Maloney and Miss Ada Finley, both of Farmers Valley were united in marriage on Monday, October 18, 1909, by Justice R.C. Gleason at his office in this borough. The happy couple have the congratulations of a large circle of friends in this vicinity. Page 5. On Wednesday of last week Dr. ? F. Elliot of Mt. Jewett, was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Hay of Buffalo, N.Y., at Dunkirk, N.Y. Oct 28, 1909: Page 3. On Wednesday of last week Mr. Martin O’Connor of Olean and Miss Mary Agnes Welch of Eldred were united in marriage at the latter place. Nov 4, 1909: Joplin-Stroupt Saturday Evening at seven o’clock, unknown to the most of their friends and relatives, Lewis Joslin and Miss Cora Stroupt, daughter of Robert Stroupt and wife, quietly went to the home of Rev. Stanley Stewart who performed the ceremony which makes their path through life’s joys and sorrows one. They were accompanied by Miss Ceila Kelly and Ed. St. Petre. They will make their home for the present with the bride’s parents. The bride is one of Coudersport’s most popular young ladies, being a graduate of Coudersport’s high school class, 1907; and also a graduate of the Lock Haven Normal School, class 1909. At present she has charge of the South Hill school, and will complete the year. The groom is a very industrious young man, a glass worker by trade. He will go to West Virginia in about ten days where he has a position for the winter. – Coudersport Democrat. Lewis’ many friends here will unite with the MINER in extending congratulations. Nov 11, 1909: The Ravenon, Ohio Republican of last Thursday contained the following _ _ _ of the marriage of Rodney R. Roeder, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Roeder of Keating township to a charming Ohio girl at Randolph, Ohio, last week. The marriage of Miss Irene May Dibble and Rodney Reval Roeder was solemnized at high noon, Wednesday, November third at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Giles E. Dibble, of Randolph in the presence of relatives and invited guests. Rev. S.C. Collier pastor of the Atwater Methodist Episcopal church, was the officiant; using the ring ceremony. (Refer to this issue for complete lengthy article) Dec 16, 1909: Mr. William Blake of Eldred and Miss Blanche Chilcote were married of the home of the groom’s brother, Hobert Blake of Bradford last Saturday evening. They will reside in Eldred for the present at least. Mr. Blake has been employed here at Smethport, both have many friends in Smethport and vicinity who wish them a long life of wedded bliss.
