Transcribed by Ronald J. Reid, 2014 January 1, 1920 Page 1 Cooper – Burlingame Married at Olean, Saturday, December 27, 1919, by the Rev. ,I.E. Crocker of the 9th Street M.E. church, Miss Gertrude L. Cooper and Mr. Frederick C. Burlingame of Smethport. The bride is a charming young lady, who has held the position of stenographer at the Norwich Carbonate of Lime Co.’s office in this town for several years past, and has been prominent in church and social circles. The groom is one of Smethport’s most popular young men, employed in the oil industry, and a member of various organizations in the town. Mr. and Mrs. Burlingame who have started housekeeping in the Briendale house on Bank street have the sincere wishes of the MINER for a happy and prosperous married life. Page 1. Holder – Bush Miss Mary Iva Holder and Alford G. Bush, both of this place were united in marriage last evening at 8 o’clock, at the home of the bride’s parents Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Holder on Franklin street, the Rev. Arthur Gregson of the Methodist Episcopal Church of this place officiating. The bride was given in marriage by her father, W.G. Holder. Only members of the family and a few intimate friends witnessed the marriage vows. After the ceremony a delicious, buffet lunch was served following which the happy couple left on a wedding trip and upon their return will be at home to their many friends in the Sasse house on the corner of Mechanic street and Rose Hill avenue. The bride is a graduate of the Smethport High School and for a number of Years has had a responsible position in the register’s office at the court house where by her cheerful manner and accommodating ways has made a friend of every one she meets. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Bush and is a popular young gentleman, who also numbers his friend by the score. Stuart of Duke Center, was solemnized the marriage of their only daughter, Olive M., to Peter Falconer of Mt. Jewett. Rev. C.L. Bash, pastor of the United Brethren church, officiating. The young couple will reside in Mt. Jewett. – Herald. January 15, 1920 Page 1 Sixtieth Anniversary The sixtieth or diamond anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Engstrom was celebrated New Year’s day at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Sara Blomberg of West Main street in an enjoyable manner. An elaborate dinner was served in honor of the esteemed couple with a number of their children and grandchildren present besides a number of friends. The bride and groom are respectively 80 and 82 years young, hale and hearty and able to take important parts in the affairs of life. They were born in Sweden and lived there until about 20 years ago when they came to Smethport, and with their seven sons and one daughter are well known to many of the readers of this paper. About twenty grand-children and six great-grandchildren also help to make up this family. All members do not live here, but most of them visit Smethport frequently and have many friends here. During the anniversary evening the congregation of the Swedish Mission Church visited this estimable couple and an evening of pleasant addresses and music was enjoyed. The bride was presented with a beautiful boquet of roses. Refreshment were served. The MINER congratulates this worthy couple and hopes to chronicle many more anniversaries of the happy marriage. Page 2 Eldred On New Year’s eve, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Becker of Wilkes- Barre, Pa., occurred the marriage of their daughter, Miss Florence Becker, to Dr., Alexander Edgar of Scranton, formerly of Eldred. The ceremony took place at 4 o’clock amid beautiful decorations. The bride is a popular young lady while the groom has a legion of friends here to extend congratulations. They will reside in Scranton. Page 2 Port Allegany The marriage of Dr. Herbert A. Smith of buffalo and Miss Ella Marle Rinn took place in New York City on January 1st. The will be at home at 267 Elmwood avenue, Buffalo, after February 1. Page 2 Port Allegany The marriage of Fred Bean and Mabel Kelly took place last Wednesday at Olean. Both are well and favorably known residents of this place. Page 2 Mt. Jewett A pretty wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Guth of Warsaw, N.Y., when their daughter, Katherine, was united in marriage to David Omundson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Omundson of Mt. Jewett, Pa., on New Year’s day, by Rev. Baker of that city. The bride was gowned in white satin and georgette and carried white carnations. The bridesmaid, Miss Lottie Elson, carried pink carnations. Enock Omundson, of Smethport, brother of the groom, was best man. Fern Guth, the bride’s niece was ring bearer. The bridal party to the strains, “The Wedding March,” played by Miss Ruth Omundson, stood beneath an arch of evergreens during the ceremony. Misses Margaret and Ruth Omundson, sisters of the groom were present at the wedding and were accompanied home by the bride and groom who spent the week end with relatives here and Smethport, returning on Sunday afternoon to Warsaw, N.Y., where they will make their home. Jewett Miss Nina Jane Falconer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Falconer and Mr. Roy Clinton Lowman, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Lowman of Marienville, Pa., were united in marriage Wednesday, January 14th at the Methodist Parsonage in Franklin, Pa., Rev. Morris A. White officiating. The bride is a popular Mt. Jewett girl, having taught in the public school a number of terms. Wilson of Marlenville, Pa. February 19, 1920 Page 1. Were Happily Married News has reached this office of the marriage of Miss Edith Schoonmaker, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Schoonmaker of East Smethport, and Ralph Mayo, son of F.B. Mayo of East Water street, Smethport. The happy event occurred at Niagara Falls last Thursday where the groom is employed. The bride is a charming young lady, a High School student, who has been employed at various times in this office. The groom served his country overseas during the late war and is a young man well liked by many friends. The MINER extends congratulations and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Mayo, and hopes that their married life may be happy and prosperous. Page 3. Lester Clark of this place and Miss Lillian Michaels of Smethport were married by the Rev. F. Becker at St. Gabriels Parsonage on Tuesday evening. The bride was becomingly dressed in black velvet and was attended by Miss Jessie Clark, dressed in blue satin and georgette. Miss Michaels is an accomplished young lady and at present is teacher in the Hazen school. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Clark and a popular Port Allegany young man who is employed at the Mississippi Glass Plant. Harry Greer acted as best man. Their many friends join with the Report-Argus in extending congratulations. Page 3. Eldred Miss Fayetta J. Arnold of this place and Ernest S. Root of Bolivar, N.Y., were united in marriage at the home of the bride, on Mechanic street, at 8:45 Sunday morning, by the Rev. Thomas Lloyd of the Baptist church. Mrs. Lester Russell acted as bridesmaid while Mr. Russell acted as best man. The happy couple left on the 9:49 train for Buffalo returning Tuesday night. They were tendered with a banquet at the home of Mrs. Iz. Silverman where there were 47 of their friends assembled. After the feast they were presented with a number of beautiful and useful gifts. Mr. Root is a successful insurance agent and oil producer who has operated through this section for the last four years. The bride has resided in Eldred for the last nine years and is well and very favorably known. Mr. and Mrs. Root expect to reside in Bolivar, N.Y. Page 3 Eldred A.B. Henry of Eldred received the startling dispatch last Friday that his brother, Walter Henry, was very ill, at his home in Seattle, Wash., and on Saturday another message that he was dead. The news was a great surprise as the deceased was believed to be in perfect health. Death followed an operation for intestinal trouble, where it was found that a malignant tumor had been draining the vitality, and complications resulted fatally. Deceased was 40 years of age and leaves a wife, two brothers, W.E. Henry of Covina, Calif., and A.B. Henry of Eldred, and one sister, Mrs. R.M. Jennings of Pittsburgh. He was general manager of the Aetna Life Insurance Company for the entire state of Washington, was remarkably successful, and a popular man socially. The funeral was held Monday. Page 3 Eldred Little Marion Bolles, aged two years and nine months, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bolles, died the fifth at Mrs. Charles Sanderson’s at Windfall. The funeral was held Sunday and burial made at Rixford. February 26, 1920 Page 4. Eldred Lester Clark of Port Allegany and Miss Lillian Michaels of Smethport were married by the Rev. Fr. Becker at St. Gabriel’s parsonage on Tuesday evening, February 10. The bride was becomingly attired in black velvet and was attended by Miss Jessie Clark, dressed in blue satin and georgette. Miss Michaels is an accomplished young lady and at present is teach in the Hazen school. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Clark and a popular Port Allegany young man, who is employed at the Mississippi Glass plant. Harry Greet acted as best man. The bride formerly lived in Eldred where she has a large number of friends. Page 4. Eldred At Buffalo Thursday afternoon John S. Wolfe, a traveling salesman of Bradford and Miss Dorothy Bettis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Bettis of Eldred, were married. The groom is quite well known here, having been a frequent visitor here for several years. March 4, 1920 Page 5. Friends in this place have received from Mrs. A.E. Cheeseman announcement of the marriage of her daughter, Miss Genevieve M. Crosby to Mr. Tom Frederick Williams, on Saturday the twenty-eighth of February, 1920, at Greenville, Pa. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Williams in this place unite with the MINER in wishing them a long and happy married life. March 11, 1920 Page 5 Mahlon Cryle Brundage and Hazel Ruth White were married in Port Allegany Thursday of last week. April 1, 1920 Page 5. Larrabee At Buffalo March 27, occurred the marriage of Miss Amelia Carpenter to Miller Hollenbeck of Mount Rose, Pa. The have been in town visiting the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Carpenter. Page 3. Valley Jingles Wedding bells are again ringing. Miss Viola Pelton of this place and Mr. Ralph Young of Toledo, Ohio, were married Saturday at Smethport. The happy couple left on the afternoon train. They will make their future home in Toledo. Page 4. Eldred At St. Mary’s Church, Sartwell Wednesday morning, Rev. Father Fisher united in marriage, Miss Rose Masterson of Sartwell and Jess Seybert of Erie. The attendants were Miss Pearl Masterson and Charles Masterson. A sumptuous wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride. After a wedding trip Mr. and Mrs. Seybert will reside at Erie, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hand of Eldred attended the wedding. ‘ Page 10. Miss Vesta H. Leet of Pittsburgh and Major Harry D. McCluskey of Kane were married at the bride’s home Thursday. Page 10. Edwin Haskell Colcord and Miss Carol Veley of Coudersport were married recently at Franklinville, N.Y. The groom is a son of M.J. Colcord, editor of the Potter Journal. May 6, 1920 Page 5 Levi S. Dodge of Andover, N.Y., and Miss Eleanor S. Gena, formerly of Mt. Jewett were recently married. They will live at Andover. Page 5. The marriage of Miss Helen Greer daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George C. Greer of Foster Brook, and Jay M. Barber, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Barber of Bradford, was solemnized in Buffalo Saturday morning at 11:30 o’clock at the parsonage of the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Mr. Babcock officiating. Page 5. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. McKean celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary Tuesday. A number of friends were entertained at their Main street home on that day. Port Allegany The marriage of Asa Kreitner of this place and Adelaide Hazard of Cuba, N.Y., took place Friday at Smethport. Their many friends extend congratulations and best wishes. May 27, 1920 Page 5. In a letter received from W.A. Andorfer of Pittsburgh, formerly a well known Smethport citizen, the information is given that his son, J.A. Andorfer was married to Miss Margaret Miller of Lancaster, Ohio, at the home of the bride on May 17. The young man has many friends here who extend congratulations. June 3, 1920 Page 1. Mr. Sven I. Winstadt and Miss Alma Ellen Strom, both of Smethport were happily united in marriage last Saturday morning at the parsonage of the Swedish Mission church, Rev. E?? G. Winstadt officiating. The happy couple have just recently arrived from Sweden and will make their home in Smethport where Mr. Winstadt is engaged as a painter for the Engstrom Brothers. They have the heartiest congratulations and well wishes of their many friends. Page 1. Ed Norman – Davida Augusta Peterson The marriage of Mr. Ed Norman, a well known Smethport man, and Miss Davida August Peterson of Colegrove, took place last Saturday morning at the parsonage of the Swedish Mission Church, Rev. Emil G. Winstadt Officiating. Mrs. Birger Peterson attended the bride and Mr. Birger Peterson, a brother to the bride, acted as best man. The happy couple left immediately for a honeymoon trip. After their return they will make their home at Smethport where Mr. Norman is engaged in house building. Both are well known and have the heartiest congratulations of their many friends. Page 1. The marriage of Miss Ruth Klein, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Klein, of Mechanic street, and Milton Green, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Green of Green street, occurred at Buffalo Monday. The young couple motored to Buffalo and were married and afterward visited Niagara Falls and other points of interest around Buffalo. The bride is one of Smethport’s most charming young ladies and the groom is an industrious young man with many friends. Tanner of Eldred, and Miss Gertrude Fitzsimmons of Conneaut, Ohio, formerly of Eldred, were married at Conneaut, May 4. IT is understood that they will reside in that city. Mr. Tanner has been very fortunate in the oil business, while the bride is an expert accountant, having been employed at the local refinery for several years. June 10, 1920 Page 1. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Mecklenburg announce the marriage of their daughter, Helen Alberta, to Charles M. Owens, of St. Louis, Mo., which took place at Bakersfield. They will make their home at Taft, Calif. Page 1. Hultman – Anderson A quiet wedding was solemnized on June 2 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Hultman of Buffalo, N.Y., when Miss Helena Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Anderson of this place was united in marriage to their son Verner A. Hultman. The Rev,. Ericson of the Swedish Church officiating. The bride wore a gown of white satin and carried a shower of brides roses. The bridesmaid, Mrs. Walter Freudenberger work pink and carried pink roses. The best man was Mr. Theodore Hultman, brother of the groom. Immediately following the ceremony a luncheon was served to the bridal party and the immediate families. Mayo – Grioux Married in Cleveland, Ohio, June 6, 1920, Miss Rachael Mayo, daughter of Capt. and Mrs. E.R. Mayo of Smethport and Henri Grioux of Akron, Ohio. Page 1. Mr. and Mrs. George Gerritt celebrated the thirty-fourth anniversary of their marriage at their home on West King street, Thursday June 3. A number of guests were present and elegant refreshments were served. Mr. and Mrs. Gerritt were presented with various beautiful remembrances in honor of the day, and the whole community will join with the MINER in wishing this esteemed couple many happy returns of the day. Wennerstrom, daughter of Carl Wennerstrom, of Port Allegany, were married at 11 o’clock a.m. Saturday, May 29, at the Lutheran parsonage, Rev. G.S. Larson officiating. The happy couple left on the afternoon train for Buffalo N.Y. They will make their home in DuBois where Mr. Hallstrom has employment as foreman in a machine shop. Page 5. Mack – Chapman On Thursday evening, in the Parsells Avenue Baptist Church, Rev. Noble I. Mack, pastor of the First Baptist Church at Smethport, Pa., was united in marriage to Miss Vera M. Chapman of No. 1311 East Main street. The church was decorated with palms, snowballs and calla-lillies. Miss Bertha Strauss presided at the pipe organ. The groom was graduated last year from the Rochester Theological Seminary, and former fellow students acted as ushers. The ushers were Rev. F.E. Cooper of Hannibal , Mo., Rev. J.O. White of Livonia; Rev. W.R. Shaw of Clifton, and Rev. H.C. Wright of South Livonia. The best man was Rev. D.L. Lloyd of Port Allegany, Pa., a classmate of Mr. Mack. The bride wore a fancy dress of white georgette and a bridal veil caught with lilies of the valley and pearls. She carried a bouquet of bridal rose. She was preceded by two flower girls carrying baskets of blossoms. Miss Marjorie Knight of this city was bridesmaid. She wore a dress of pink georgette crepe and carried a bouquet of sweet peas. Rev. Frederick G. Reynolds, pastor of the Parsells Avenue Church of which the bride was a member officiated. Luncheon was served at the home of the bride, after which Mr. and Mrs. Mack left for a western wedding trip. In addition to the parents and immediate relatives and friends of the bride and groom there were present from out of town Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Dean and daughter Grace, from Oswego; Gansvoot Mack, father of the groom, from Auburn, and the ministers who acted as ushers, and their wives. Pre-nuptial affairs included a variety of shower given by the Friendship Class of the Parsells Avenue Church at the home of Miss Julia Rogers, and a kitchen shower given by Miss Florence Taylor. Rev. and Mrs. Mack will be at home after June 15th at Smethport, Pa. June 17, 1920 Page 5. Green – Beetz Mr. and Mrs. George Beetz of Buffalo, N.Y., announce the engagement of their daughter, Albula Geneva, to Mr. Neal Everett Green of this place.
